Nicknamed "Snake" by others on tour. Got on the PGA Tour when he finished fourth at the 1998 Qualifying tournament. Had a fine amateur career winning 1993 Australian Amateur Championship, 1994 French Amateur. Plays left-handed and in 1998, became the first lefty to win the Australian Open since Claude Felstead did it in 1909. Earned his PGA Tour card at Q-School at the end of 1998 finishing T4th.
Lost his PGA Tour card in 2004.

In 2011 finished inside the top 100 (No. 81) in the FedExCup standings for the third consecutive season. Added a second Australian Open title to his resume late in the year, his first title of any kind since the 2008 Henrico County Open on the Web.com Tour. Began the final round of the Australian Open two strokes behind fellow Aussie John Senden. Shot a 3-under 69 Sunday at The Lakes GC in Sydney to take the clubhouse lead and then watched as Senden's long birdie putt that would have forced a playoff on the 72nd hole just missed. Won for the second time in three weeks when he captured the Australian PGA Championship. He joined Robert Allenby and Marcus Fraser in a playoff that ended quickly when he made par on the first playoff hole after Fraser and Allenby both had errant tee shots.
2012 Notes: Made 20 of 25 cuts with one top 10 a 9th at The Barclays. Finished 35th in the FedExCup standings and 81st on the money list.
2013 Notes: Made 14 of 25 cuts with two top 10s, T-4th at the Tampa Bay Championship and T-10th at the Northern Trust. Finished 97th in the FedExCup standings and 124th on the money list.
2014 Notes: Made 16 cuts in 27 starts. Opened the season with a T-15th finish at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Next start resulted in a T-10th at The McGladrey Classic, thanks to a closing, 6-under 64. Held the first-round lead at the Quicken Loans National in late June but finished T-30th after rounds of 78-72-72. Made his next four more cuts in a row after the Quicken Loan National. A missed cut at the Wyndham Championship ended his chance of advancing to the FedExCup Playoffs. For the first time since 2006, failed to finish inside the top 125 in either the FedExCup standings (132nd) or on the official money list (139). As a result, needed to attempt to regain his card through the Web.com Tour Finals. But he wasn't able to regain it when he finished 59th at the Hotel Fitness Championship, T-8th at the Chiquita Classic but missed the cut in the final two events. Went over to Australian at the end of the year and missed the cut at the BetEasy Masters, they was 4th at the Australian Open and won the Australian PGA Championship, his third win on the Australian Tour and a victory that help him claim the Order of Merit for the Tour of Australasia in 2014.
2015 Notes: Made 12 cuts in 17 starts and finished 172nd in the FedExCup standings, failing to make the Playoffs for the second consecutive season. Made 6 starts on the Web.com Tour, including all 4 in the Web.com Tour Finals, where he T-103rd on that money list. Will play the 2016 season out of the Veteran Member category. Best finish on the PGA Tour was T-26th at the CIMB Classic. Played twice on the Web.Com Tour, T-61st at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open and T-48th at the BMW Charity Pro-Am. In the final series miss the cut at Hotel Fitness and Web.Com Tour Championship, was T-61st at the Nationwide Children's and T-66th at the Small Business Connection.
2016 Notes: Broke through in his 386th career PGA Tour start for his first win at the Barracuda Championship. With only conditional status for the year, won in his 7th start of the season after missing five consecutive cuts. The victory marked his first top-10 finish on the PGA Tour since a T-10th at the 2013 RSM Classic. Prior to his win, his best finishes on Tour were a pair of T-2nds at the 2000 Kemper Insurance Open and 2009 Buick Open. Became the first player to win in his 40s on the PGA Tour in 2016 season. Only the 12th different left-handed player to win on the PGA Tour and first since Bubba Watson (2016 Northern Trust Open). By virtue of his victory, earned a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and the final spot into The Open Championship.
