As for last week, congratulations to stschroed4 for winning with the picks of Peter Uihlein (T-5th), J.T. Poston & Tom Hodge (T-10th), J.J. Spaun (T-17th), Harold Varner (T-24th) and Luke List (T-37th). Not the household names that I would of picked, but again if you have six guys make the cut your advantage is good and you will win money. Of the 150 players that participated in the game not one picked D.A. Points, while 10% of you did pick runnerup Byrson DeChambeau, but nobody picked Retief Goosen or Bill Lunde, who also were runner-ups.
Here are the results of our game:
So how did last week go for me?
I had one good finish with Peter Uihlein (T-5th) and then had Scott Brown (T-17th) and Steve Marino (T-37th) made the cut, but when you have three miss the cut like I did with (Ryan Brehm, Ryo Ishikawa & Ian Poulter) you know the week wasn’t going to be pretty. Worst feeling in the world is not checking your DraftKings picks over the weekend because you know how bad they will be.
Picks for Shell Houston Open
Ok, time to get back on the horse and again the goal is to pick six guys that stick around for all four days. On top of the list is Jordan Spieth ($12,000), Jon Rahm ($10,700), Henrik Stenson ($10,400), Rickie Fowler ($10,000), Justin Rose ($9,700) and Adam Scott ($9,400). Of these none of them appeal to me. First I got stung two weeks ago by Henrik Stenson missing the cut so have a bad taste in my mouth over him. In looking at jon Rahm, he seems to struggle the week after a good finish, so I am avoiding him. As for Spieth, Rose and Scott think their hearts are in Augusta and this week is more about getting ready for the Masters. Now that leaves Rickie Fowler at $10,000, who is playing ok and has some good finishes in Houston, T-10th last year and 6th in 2014. In five tries he has made the cut all five times so he is a good horse for me. Now my top choice was Phil Mickelson at $8,900 he always seems to make the cut and has played the event for the last nine years in a row so you know he likes the course. He only has missed one cut (2009) but has a victory in 2011, a T-4th in 2012 and top-20 finishes since. I also see his game progressing, each week he seems to be getting better and better and frankly he may be one of my horses at the Masters. Next up is Russell Henley at $8,700 which is a ridiculous price for a guy that hasn’t done much this year. Still he was T-9th at the Valspar, T-45th at the Palmer and has only missed one cut out of ten starts. But the reason for picking him is that he was T-5th last year, 4th in 2015, T-7th in 2014 and his first year playing in Houston T-45th. He has 16 solid rounds of work as he only has been over par twice and is a total of 37 under par in his four tries. So I am putting a lot of faith in him. Next up is Rafael Cabrera-Bello at $7,900. He was 4th last year during a great run of golf so that concerns me a bit because he hasn’t been on the same run, but in 11 starts in 2017 hasn’t missed a cut and was in contention three weeks ago in Indian (T-5th) and won two of his three matches last week at the Match Play. Next is Peter Uihlein at $7,300. He only played once at Houston and missed the cut in 2014, but I like his resume of golf in 2017. He has played in seven different countries in 10 starts this year, from South Africa to Australia to India to United Arab Emirates to Puerto Rico last week. He has only missed one cut back in December and was T-5th last week in Puerto Rico, T-17th in Indian and last month 4th in the Tshwane Open. So I have faith he will stick around for four rounds and give me a solid performance. My last pick is Jason Dufner who I am surprised to get at only $7,100. He is low because he doesn’t have much history in this event only playing it three times, the last in 2009 when he finished T-77th. His body of work on the PGA Tour in 2017 has been ok, in 7 starts has made 6 cuts and is best finish was T-11th at the Valspar Championship. He didn’t have a very good match play, losing two of his three matches and halving the last one, but in his 7 starts has five top-25 finishes which makes me feel confident. S here are my six picks for the week:
Rickie Fowler at $10,000
Phil Mickelson at $8,900
Russell Henley at $8,700
Rafael Cabrera-Bello at $7,900
Peter Uihlein at $7,300
Jason Dufner at $7,100
As i post this at Lunch time on Wednesday we only have 124 players in the game so we need about 76 to make it an official game, so come play with us.
