Andrew Johnston

Started playing golf at age 4 after his father, a single-digit handicapper, took him to a field to hit balls and joined North Middlesex Golf Club shortly after the visit. Climbed through the amateur ranks to represent the England Boys team, winning the Boys Internationals in 2007, before turning professional at age 20. He is an Arsenal fan and an avid follower of basketball. He is affectionately referred to on tour as "Beef."
He made his European Tour breakthrough in 2016 at the Real Club Valderrama Open de Espana. Won by one shot with the first over-par winning total in a regular European Tour event since Ian Woosnam won the Scottish Open at Carnoustie in 1996.
Won the Challenge Tour Rankings in 2014 thanks to two victories that season, at the Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, and The Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge. Provided one of the most-watched moments of the 2015 season when he had a hole-in-one at the BMW PGA Championship and ran towards a friend in the crowd for a chest-bump celebration. He entertained fans again at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open in July, where he holed his second shot on the 18th hole of the third round, then mimicked the trademark sword celebration of Miguel Angel Jimenez, with whom he was playing. The wedge shot from the fairway was later voted the European Tour Shot of the Month for July. Earned a maiden European Tour campaign through the 2011 Challenge Tour Rankings, only to struggle for the next two seasons before bouncing back in 2014.
2015 Notes: Played in 25 European Tour events, making 14 cuts. He had two top-10s including a third in the season-opening Alfred Dunhill Championship. Ended his year with a top-10, 10th at the Turkish Airlines Open. Was 70th on the money list.
2016 Notes: Played in 25 European Tour events making 20 cuts and finishing in the top 10 five times. He made his European Tour breakthrough at the 2016 Real Club Valderrama Open de Espana. Won by one shot with the first over-par winning total in a regular European Tour event since Ian Woosnam was also one over par to win the Scottish Open at Carnoustie in 1996. It was not only his impressive performance that caught the headlines; his post-round comments about wanting to "go home and get hammered with his mates and see his mum" were picked up around the world. Finished outright third at the European Masters, T-4th at the Qatar Masters, T-7th at the BMW PGA Championship and 8th at the Open Championship held at Troon. Won 1,267,393 euros and was 26th in the Race to Dubai. Even with a busy schedule in Europe, he found time to play in three Web.com Tour finals events, making two cuts and with a fourth-place finish at the Albertsons Boise Open. He finishes 21st in the final priority-ranking order earning a PGA Tour card for 2017.
2017 Notes: Playing full time on the PGA Tour has had one top-10 when he was T-10th at the Puerto Rico Open. He played in 13 PGA Tour events and was 189th in the FedExCup Race. Did not play again after withdrawing with a shoulder injury following the first round of the PGA Championship. Played in his first European Tour event at the BMW PGA, finishing T-21st. Best finish on the European Tour, T-19th at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open. He only played 10 times on the European Tour and was 116th in the Race To Dubai. Johnston decided that it was too hard playing both tours and decided to give up his PGA Tour card, move back to London and play full-time on the European Tour.
2018 Notes: Played in 20 European Tour events making 15 cuts with three runner-up finishes. Earned euro517,940 while finishing 71st in the Race to Dubai. In his first start of the year finished T-9th at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. Finished second at the Hero Indian Open losing a playoff to Matt Wallace when Johnston made bogey on the first playoff hole. Had a T-10th at the Nordea Masters.
2019 Notes: Had a T-9th at the Australian PGA Championship. At the Aberdeen Standard Scottish Open shot a final round 62 which included a bogey on his final hole to finish T-4th, three shots back of the Wiesberger/Hebert playoff. With the famous win earned one of the last spots into the Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
