Matt Jones

Jones was born in Sydney, Australia, and he later moved to the United States to attend Arizona State University where he was a first-team All-American in 2001. Helped lead the Sun Devils to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championship. Shared medalist honors at the 2001 NCAA West Regional with fellow 2007 Korn Ferry Tour grad, Kyle Thompson.
He turned professional in 2001. Finished T-144th in the 2003 PGA Tour Q-School which got him membership onto the Korn Ferry Tour. Played on that tour until he finished seventh on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2007 to earn membership on the PGA Tour in 2008. He has also played on the PGA Tour of Australasia.

2007 Korn Ferry Tour Summary: Tournaments entered - 25; in money - 18; top-10 finishes -6; scoring average 69.95 (ranked 7th); money $302,227 (ranked 7th); best finish 2nd, South Georgia Classic & Mark Christopher Charity Classic. He won enough money to get his PGA Tour card for 2008.
2008 Notes: Made 17 of 30 cuts on the PGA Tour during his rookie season, had a pair of top-10 finishes and finished 135th on the money list. Went back to Q-School but his T-107th finish was not good enough for a full card so played in 2009 in the 126th to 150th category.
2009 Notes: Had a pair of fifth-place finishes at the Buick Invitational and the John Deere Classic but in the last event to qualify for the FedExCup playoffs, he missed an 8-foot putt on the 72nd hole at the Wyndham Championship that prevented him to get the last spot in the FedExCup playoffs. Entered the Fall Series at 119th on the money list and despite making the cut at Turning Stone and Frys.com Open, finished 134th at the end of the season. However, gained exempt status at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament with a third-place finish.
2010 Notes: Enjoyed his finest year on Tour to date, with five top-10s and a finish inside the top-125 on the money list for the first time in his career. His fifth top-10 finish of the season came at the John Deere Classic, finished 5th thanks largely to an opening-round, 7-under 64 for his best finish of the season. Had a strong performance late in the year at the Australian Open where he shot a final-round 68 to move up the leaderboard to tie for second behind Geoff Ogilvy.
2011 Notes: Finished 127th in the FedExCup standings, the third time in four years he just missed the FedEx Cup Playoffs (finished 127th in 2008 and 126th in 2009). Best finish of the year came at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a T-6th. Entered the Wyndham Championship 122nd in the FedExCup standings but missed the cut and finished 127th. Ended the season 133rd on the official money list, nearly identical to his 134th-place finish in 2009 and 135th-place showing in 2008. Finished T-37 at PGA Tour Q-School and so again played in 2012 in the 126th to 150th category.
2012 Notes: Finished 172nd on the money list in 19 starts and eight made cuts. Season highlight was his one top-10 finish, a T-5th at the Puerto Rico Open after holding a share of the first-round lead with eventual winner George McNeill. Also was the 36-hole leader. Finished T-14th at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament to regain his Tour card for 2013. In December, finished T-10th at the Emirates Australian Open at the Lakes G.C. in Sydney. Was in contention going into the final round until a 77 derailed him.
2013 Notes: Enjoyed career-best numbers in FedExCup ranking (32nd), money list (47th), cuts made (18), top-25 finishes (nine), and equaling top-10 finishes (five). Season highlighted by a career-best, runner-up finish at The Greenbrier Classic.
2014 Notes: In Houston, had the highlight of his life when he won the Shell Houston Open, beating Matt Kuchar on the first hole of a playoff when Jones holed a 42-yard chip for birdie. Got into the playoff thanks to a final-round 66 to catch Kuchar. The win forced him to change his travel and personal plans as he got the last invite to play in the Masters for the first time where he would miss the cut. Finished the year 67th in the FedExCup standings and 47th on the money list.
2015 Notes: Had three top-10s including 3rd at the Arnold Palmer and T-3rd at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. In 22 starts made the cut in 20, as he finished 33rd on the FedEx Cup and 44th on the money list. His biggest highlight came in November when he won the 100th Australian Open, despite a bogey, a double bogey, and a triple bogey on the front nine during the final round. He won by a shot over defending champions Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott.
2016 Notes: Played in 27 PGA Tour events making 15 cuts. Did not have any top-10s, and the best finish was T-11th at AT&T Pebble Beach. Was 126th in the FedExCup race. Went into the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, made one cut in three starts, T-53rd Albertsons Boise Open. Was 111th in the Priority rank.
2017 Notes: Played in 20 PGA Tour events, making 12 cuts. Did not have any top-10s, best finish T-13th at the Valero Texas Open. Was 152nd in the FedExCup race forcing him back to the Korn Ferry Tour Finals. Missed the cut in the first two events, then was T-20th at the DAP Championship and then T-5th Korn Ferry Tour Championship. With this finish ended 35th on the final priority list saving his PGA Tour card for 2018. Got an added present when he ended his year in Australia, was T-2nd at the Emirates Australian Open and T-30th at the Australian PGA Championship.
2018 Notes: Played in 23 PGA Tour events making 11 cuts. Best finish T-12th at the John Deere Classic, T-13th in AT&T Byron Nelson. Finished 151st in the FedExCup standings and went to the Korn Ferry Tour Playoffs. Played in two events, was T-10th at the Nationwide Children's and T-2nd at the DAP Championship to secure a return to the PGA Tour for the 2019 season with a 10th-place finish on the Korn Ferry Tour Finals money list. Was 16th in the final priority-ranking order.
2019 Notes: Played in 27 Tour events making 17 cuts with two top-ten finishes. Was 91st in the FedExCup standings. Was T-5th at the AT&T Byron Nelson, six shots back of winner Sung Kang. Shot 63 in the final round to finish T-4th at the Barbasol Championship, four shots back of winner Jim Herman. In the FedExCup Playoffs was T-30th at the Northern Trust.
2020 Notes: Played in 23 PGA Tour events making 16 cuts with two top-ten finishes. Was 95th in the FedExCup standings. In his first start of the season was T-10th at the Military Tribute at The Greenbrier. Was T-5th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Best finish after the break, T-14th at the Workday Charity Open. In the FedExCup playoffs was 69th at the Northern Trust.
2021 Notes: Played in 30 PGA Tour events making 22 cuts with three top-ten finishes. Was 47th in the FedExCup standings. Was T-4th at the Bermuda Championship, three shots back of the Brian Gay/Wyndham Clark playoff. Was T-8th at the Genesis Invitational. At the Honda Classic opened up with a 61, tying the course record for PGA National, then shot rounds of 70-69-68 to beat Brandon Hagy by five shots. His first-round 61 was 10.49 shots under the field average and he became the first player in the Honda Classic to win the title after leading in the first round since Justin Leonard did it in 2003. With the victory, Jones qualified for the 2021 Masters where he finished T-26th. In the FedExCup Playoffs missed the cut at the Northern Trust and T-38th at the BMW Championship.
2022 Notes: Shot a final-round 63 to finish 3rd at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, two shots back of winner Cameron Smith. Shot a final-round 66 at the Valero Texas Open to finish T-2nd, two shots back of winner J.J. Spaun.
