Did not start to play golf seriously until he was 16 years old. In high school, he played a lot of tennis and baseball until his golf coach convinced him to concentrate on golf. After high school attended Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, where he played varsity golf for two years before the school dropped its golf program. He then turned professional and worked as an assistant at San Luis Obispo Country Club. Credited his victory in the 1979 FootJoy PGA Assistant Professional Championship for jump-starting his career.
Regarded as one of the hardest workers on tour, as well as one of the best putters, he finished in the top 100 of the money list every year between 1988 and 2005. Prior to his win in the 1994 Nestle Invitational, he was the leading money-winner on the PGA Tour without a victory. Almost pulled a double victory in 1994 when he lost in the playoff for the U.S. Open. He is nicknamed "Boss of the Moss" for his great putting skills. Roberts has had to deal with problems with a bulging disc in his back the last several years. Missed the Masters in 1998 when he broke ribs while sneezing.
Member of 1995 Ryder Cup Team and 1994 and 2000 Presidents Cup Teams.
Played full-time on the PGA Tour between 1981 and 2005, in 633 events won eight times, was runner-up 10 times, third, 10 times and finished in the top 10 94 times. Had earnings of $15.2 million.
When he turned 50 he made a smooth transition to the PGA Tour Champions, where he has won 13 times in 144 events. Since his first full season on tour in 2006, has finished in the top 10 in yearly earnings every year but 2011 when he finished 21st in a season when he suffered trouble with his shoulder and upper back.
2012 Notes: Showed that he is healthy again with a win at the Toshiba Classic. Also had 15 other top-25 finishes to go with the win for the year.
2013 Notes: Saw his string of top-30 money-list finishes end at eight consecutive years when he slipped to 35th. Posted just two top 10s in 21 starts and was in the top 25 just eight times, fewest in his PGA Tour Champions career. Played in the final group Sunday at the Insperity Championship in May. His even-par 72 in the final round led to a T-4th finish, his best effort since winning the 2012 Toshiba Classic. His other top-10 finish did not come until September when he finished eighth at the Montreal Championship.
2014 Notes: Slipped to 48th on the final money list, with earnings totaling $347,083. Had three top 10s, was two strokes off the lead after 36 holes of the Quebec Championship and carded a final-round 71 to finish T-7th. Had his initial top-10 finish in his fourth start of the year when he was T-10th at the Toshiba Classic. Also T-10th at the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach when he birdied four of his last six holes to post a 7-under 65, equaling the low round of the tournament.
2015 Notes: Teamed with Mark Wiebe to finish T-3rd at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf in April. The pair was 12 under par on the par-3 Top of the Rock Course. Got his second top-10 with a T-9th at the SAS Championship, was 46th on the money list and 50th in the Schwab rankings.
2016 Notes: Played in 20 events, best finish T-6th at the Tucson Conquistadores and T-9th at the U.S. Senior Open. Was 46th on the money list and 48th in the Schwab Ranking.
2017 Notes: In 18 events had one top-10, teaming with Tom Lehman for a T-8th finish at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf. Finished 67th on the money list and 69th in Schwab Rank.
2018 Notes: In December Roberts learned that he had prostate cancer and instead of undergoing radiation treatment which Roberts felt could have ended his career he went a different route. After finishing 32nd in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, Roberts underwent surgery on Feb. 14 to have his prostate removed. Last Thursday Roberts gave himself an early 63rd birthday present by competing in the Regions Tradition, a tournament that was the first of his 13 wins on the PGA Tour Champions. Played in just eight PGA Tour Champions events, was 92nd on the money list.
2019 Notes: Was T-17th with partner Shaun Micheel at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf. Best individual finish, 39th at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.
