Golf IQ Open Championship Player Guide - 2021
Justin Thomas (bio)Justin Thomas Bio - (C) GOLFstats Inc. 2020Playing in just his 10th career major, Thomas shot a final-round 68 to win the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club. His eight-under 276 total was two strokes better than Francesco Molinari, Patrick Reed, and Louis Oosthuizen. It was only fitting that Thomas would win the championship that means so much for club professionals since his father, Mike, who was watching his son win, is a PGA Club Professional, and Justin's grandfather, Paul, was a 60-year member of the PGA of America. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Click on any table column header to sort by that column | Outlook: As of 12/13/21 4th in 2021 FedExCup 6th in Official World Ranking Watch out for him at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Kapalua is good for his game and his putting is ok on the course. Also look for him to get better on Bent, as he plays more of them and gets used to the grass. We know that no matter what, Thomas will finish in the top-8 of the FedExCup rankings. Despite him being a good choice at the Masters and he should play well at the PGA Championship held at Southern Hills, don’t like him at the U.S. Open (The Country Club) or the British Open St. Andrews). This Past Year: A very strange year for Thomas, on paper it didn't seem good but it was again one of his best years. How some personal setbacks like his grandfather that died, plus got caught altering a racial slang at the Sentry which took a bit to get over. He surprised a lot of people by winning the Players Championship which was his only top-13 finish in 11 starts between the Players and the WGC-FedEx St.Jude. So the reason for him finishing 4th in the FedExCup was his great early season play and then playing well in the playoffs.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Game: He is more consistent in not only hitting greens but getting the ball close to the hole. What Thomas has been good is being consistent and being able to avoid bogeys and worst. He always seems to be among the leaders in making birdies and being one of the top players in Par Breakers.
Areas to Work On He is one of the best shotmakers on the PGA Tour. He could get even better if he could make more putts, in 2021 he ranked 113th in putting inside 10 feet and was 104th in Strokes Gained Putting. This is proven out when Thomas wins, he does it when he is putting well. Most of his problems on the greens are on courses with Bent greens. I’m not saying it’s a major problem since he has won five times on Bent greens, but still some courses he struggles on. Lastly and you can’t practice this, Thomas has to get better when he gets himself in contention. He calls it a mental strategy hurdle, of his 180 PGA Tour starts, Thomas has worked himself into contention 53 times. That’s the number of times he has gone into the final round with either the lead or 5 shots of the leader. But in those 53 times, he has won 14 times. Same thing about winning when you go into the final round with the lead or share of the lead. He has found himself in that position 14 times, winning eight times. Now that seems like an impressive record, but since the 2019 Genesis Open when he blew a four-shot third-round lead with a final round 75 giving the win to J.B. Holmes. Adding to this problem, Thomas led the 2020 WGC-Mexico, Workday Charity and 2021 Zozo Championship but didn’t win the tournament. Best and Worst Courses and Tournaments: He is good on the west coast, likes playing the courses in Hawaii. Also good on Florida courses, again courses with Bermuda-style greens. Has won twice at the Sentry TofC, look for him to play well again. Also won at WGC-FedEx on two different courses, one in Ohio and the other in Memphis. To bad that event is gone, but they are still playing at TPC Southwind for the Northern Trust. Avoid courses in the desert and Texas, has struggled on these courses. Still his best bet is playing well at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
