Burmester was born in Zimbabwe but represents South Africa in golf. Sporting talent runs in the family for Burmester - his father, Mark, played international cricket for Zimbabwe while his mother, Michelle, is a talented golfer with a women's course record at Royal Harare Golf Club, his home course. He had a distinguished amateur career, which included selection for his province in the 2008 and 2009 interprovincial. He also won the International Team Championships in 2009 and decided to turn pro the year after.

He endured a tough first season on the Sunshine Tour but has shown his mettle as he came second on the Big Easy Tour Championship in 2011. He steadily improved after that and was in the top 40 on the Order of Merit in 2012 of the Sunshine Tour.

His breakthrough win came in the 2013 Polokwane Classic, and he followed that up a year later with a victory in the 2015 Sun City Challenge. But 2015 proved decisive for Dean: He won the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open to take the national open of his former homeland, and then he followed that up with three more victories to finish fourth on the Order of Merit.

2016 Notes: He played in 25 events on the Sunshine Tour and European Tour. He was runner-up twice on the Sunshine Tour at the Dimension Data Pro-am and Eye of Africa PGA Championship. In his first full season on the European Tour, he played in 14 events, making 12 cuts and finishing in the top ten twice. His best finish was T-4th at the Tshwane Open. He was 140th in the Race to Dubai.

2017 Notes: He played in 29 events, 24 of them on the European Tour. He made 20 cuts and 6 top-ten finishes. He won the Tshwane Open by 3 shots over Jorge Campillo and Mikko Korhonen. He was 42nd in the Race to Dubai.

2018 Notes: He played in 24 European Tour events, making 17 cuts and two top-ten finishes. His best finish was T-4th at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. He finished 42nd in the Race to Dubai. On the Sunshine Tour, his best finish was T-3rd at the Investec Royal Swazi Open, T-3rd at the Tour Championship, and T-4th at the Dimension Data Pro-am, both on the Sunshine Tour. He did finish 7th on the Sunshine Order of Merit for 2017/18.

2019 Notes: Played in 27 European Tour events, making 14 cuts with two top-ten finishes. Was 101st in the Race to Dubai. His best finish was T-3rd at the Scandinavian Invitation. Also on the European Tour was T-9th at the Belgian Knockout, on the Sunshine Tour, 3rd Dimension Data Pro-Am.

2020 Notes: Played in 23 European Tour events, making 13 cuts with four top-ten finishes. Was 41st in the Race to Dubai. Was T-3rd at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, two shots back of the Herbert/Bezuidenhout playoff. Was T-5th at the Italian Open, three back of winner Ross McGowan, and 4th at the South African Open. Finished the year with a T-14th at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.

2021 Notes: Played in 24 European Tour events, making 18 cuts with seven top-ten finishes. He was 18th in the Race to Dubai. Was T-2nd at the Kit Kat Group PROAM on the Sunshine Tour, a shot back of winner Rhys Enoch. Was T-8th at the Magical Kenya Open, then won the Tenerife Open by five shots over Nicolai Von Dellingshausen. It was his second career European Tour victory. In his next start was T-4th at the Canary Islands Championship. Shot final round 70 at the Betfred British Masters to drop down into a T-6th, two shots back of the Bland/Migliozzi playoff. Was 6th at the D+D Real Czech Masters. Shot a final-round 65 to finish T-7th at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship five shots back of winner Danny Willett. Finished off the European Tour with a T-6th finish at the DP World Tour Championship, he was five shots back of winner Collin Morikawa. On the Sunshine Tour in the 2021/22 season, has played in seven events. He won the 2021 PGA Championship, shooting 65 in the final round to beat Peter Moolman by two shots. He was 4th at the SA Open Championship five shots back of winner Daniel Van Tonder. He was 2nd at the Dimension Data Pro-Am a shot back of winner Alexander Knappe. For the season is 2nd on the Sunshine Tour 2021/22 Order of Merit.

2022 Notes: Played in 15 DP World Tour events, making ten cuts with two top-ten finishes. Was 69th in the Race to Dubai. His 2nd place finish at the Dimension Data Pro-am was also counted on the European Challenge Tour. He was 2nd at the Steyn City Championship, three shots back of winner Shaun Norris; the event is counted on both the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour. Was T-10th at the Genesis Scottish Open and T-11th at the British Open. He gained entry to the Korn Ferry Tour Championship when he finished T-4th at the Albertsons Boise Open, T-46th at the Nationwide Children Hospital Championship, and T-5th at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship. He finished 9th in the Finals rank giving him spots on the PGA Tour in 2023.

2023 Notes: In his first event on the PGA Tour for the season, he placed 4th at the Sanderson Farms Championship, three back of the Mackenzie Hughes/Sepp Straka playoff. He was T-5th at the Investec South African Open and T-7th at the Alfred Dunhill Championship. After finishing T-41st at AT&T Pebble Beach, he moved over to LIV Golf. Was 7th at the St. Andrews Bay Championship.

2024 Notes: Started the year in Nov/December winning the Joburg Open and Investec South African Championship. Was T-44th at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and T-31st at the International Series Oman. FInished T-12th at the PGA Championship and 69th at the U.S. Open.
