Bryson DeChambeau (bio)Bryson DeChambeau Bio - (C) GOLFstats Inc. 2020ELIGIBILITY: The first 50 players on the OWGR for Week 21, 2024.] Bryson James Aldrich DeChambeau was born in Modesto, Calif., and started playing golf at age 7 when his family moved to Clovis, which is east of Fresno. He was always the smartest in his class. At age 6, his math skills were off the charts as he was a master of math and even understood algebra. During high school, he would rewrite textbooks and, by doing that, was able to understand things on a comprehensive level. Even today, his clubs have physics formulas stamped on them. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Click on any table column header to sort by that column | Outlook: As of 12/18/21 7th in 2021 FedExCup 7th in Official World Ranking The big question is if DeChambeau can find a way to channel his length and control it. Remember John Daly also hit is long and putted well and never achieved the greatest his advantage gave him. If DeChambeau can do the opposite of what Daly did, his advantage will make him the best player on tour. But he has to be able to do it at Augusta and the rest of the majors. People will always remember his U.S. Open victory, but wins at Rocket Mortgage, Shriners and Dell Technologies will not shine as bright. This Past Year: 2020 proved to be a breakout year for him. During the COVID-19 break DeChambeau buffed up, adding 20 pounds to the frame which had already added 20 pounds in the years before. After the break he came out and completely changed the landscape of the game as his added strength increased his ball speed and made drives of 350 more of the norm. After finishing T-3rd at the Charles Schwab, he was T-8th at Heritage and T-6th at the Travelers. The next week he overpowered the field to win the Rocket Mortgage and become the talk of the tour. He was able to finish T-4th at the PGA Championship, but struggled with his game in the FedExCup and dropped from 4th to his final position of 22nd on the FedExCup. His biggest accomplishment was in September when he won the U.S. Open by six shots over Matthew Wolff. His first major was done in a speculator manor as he not only overpowered a Winged Foot Golf Club which had proven tough in the half dozen majors played on the course but did it with a combination of great driving, great iron play and a deft touch on the greens along with the ability to get it up and down when he missed a green.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Game: He has been able to overpower tee shots in which every drive in 2020 was 322 yards. With this skill he has a new found advantage over most of the others in the field, because he is able to even on tight courses drive it far enough that even if he misses the fairways, will have a short iron left. Another skill DeChambeau has is he is a good putter, with the combination of driving makes him hard to beat.
The biggest thing he needs to work on is to be able to control his power, which at the same time has gotten him in trouble and taking him out of contention like the driver did during the Masters. Best and Worst Courses and Tournaments: Loves TPC Summerlin, in his last four starts was T-7th, won, T-4th and T-8th in 2021. Also plays well at the Arnold Palmer, won in his only Rocket Mortgage start on a course suited for his game and played well at the Travelers.
