Was only 4 when his father took him to the golf course for the first time. By age 7, he was playing in junior events around his hometown of Abilene and dreaming of playing on the PGA Tour. Was also an exceptional basketball player, earning all-district honors in his junior and senior years. Played golf for the University of Texas, winning the Jack Nicklaus and Fred Haskins awards as the college player of the year. After leaving Texas in 1988, he finished 1989 as the PGA Tour's Rookie of the Year (102nd on the money list), having lost a playoff at the B.C. Open to Mike Hulbert. Although he would contend many more times, his first two PGA Tour victories were wire-to-wire performances. Since joining the PGA Tour in 1989, has never finished lower than 149th on the money list and has only been out of the top-125 twice (1996 and 2008).
He strained his right wrist at the Texas Open in 2010 after unearthing a chunk of limestone with a wedge on the first hole of the tournament, and the injury bothered him the rest of the year to the point that only rest and prolotherapy treatment could help. He delayed his 2011 debut for four months and got it together to lose a playoff at the Greenbrier Classic. Despite the high finish, only finished 135th on the money list. At Q-School finished T-8th to regain his Tour card for 2012.
Has played on the PGA Tour since 1988. Had to rehab from a shoulder injury in 2014 which slowed him down to only playing in 2 events in 2014 and 1 event in 2016. In 2016 will have 23 starts on a major medical extension. Has played a total of 653 PGA Tour events from 1988 to the present, he has won four times, the last coming at the 2002 Kemper Insurance Open. In those events, he has made 446 cuts and has been in the top-10, 205 times. His total earnings are $21.6 million dollars.
2017 Notes: Split playing time between the PGA Tour (15 starts) and PGA Tour Champions Tour (nine starts). Overall, enjoyed his most success on PGA Tour Champions with a pair of top-10 finishes to his credit (T-5th at the Senior PGA Championship & T-10th Shaw Charity Classic). Made just three cuts in 15 starts on the PGA Tour. Will enter the 2017-18 season on a Major Medical Extension with eight available events to earn 300 FedExCup points or $479,415 to remain exempt for the remainder of the season. Injury dates back to the 2013-14 season and limited him to just two starts that year. Finished on the PGA Tour Champions Tour 59th in earnings with $273,289.
2018 Notes: Played in 15 PGA Tour Champions events with six top-ten finishes. T-5th at the Cologuard Classic, T-8th at the Regions Tradition, and T-10th at the Senior PGA Championship. Shot 65-66 on the weekend to finish T-5th at the 3M Championship. T-8th at both the Boeing Classic and the Ally Challenge. Played in the first two playoff events and finished 36th in the Charles Schwab Cup. In only 8 PGA Tour starts made one cut, T-49th Valspar Championship.
2019 Notes: Played in 17 PGA Tour Champions events with four top-ten finishes. Was 33rd on the Schwab rankings. Was 3rd at the Oasis Championship, six shots back of winner Bernhard Langer. Was 4th at the U.S. Senior Open Championship, nine shots back of winner Steve Stricker. Was T-10th at the Senior Open Championship, six shots back of winner Bernhard Langer. Was 2nd at the Sanford International, two shots back of winner Rocco Mediate. In his final start of the year was T-25th at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
2020 & 2021 Notes: Played in 24 PGA Tour Champions events with three top-ten finishes. Was 52nd on the Schwab rankings. Started the season finishing 2nd at the 2020 Chubb Classic, two shots back of winner Scott Parel. Be 15 months before he finished in the top ten again, was T-5th at the 2021 Insperity Invitational, four shots back of winner Mike Weir. Was T-8th at the U.S. Senior Open, six shots back of winner Jim Furyk. Was T-41st in his season-ending TimberTech Championship.
2022 Notes: Played in 18 PGA Tour Champions events with two top-ten finishes. Was 51st in the Schwab rankings and 51st on the money list earning $407,049. Trailing by a shot entering the final round of the Rapiscan Systems Classic, shot a final-round 71 to finish 4th, six shots from winner Steven Alker. Was T-5th at the Ascension Charity Classic, four shots back of winner Padraig Harrington.
2023 Notes: Finished T-6th at the Insperity Invitational.
