Did not take up golf until age 20, when he began going with friends during his days off as a fireman in Hutchinson, Kan. Former Major League Baseball pitcher and Champions Tour member Ralph Terry helped him learn the game. Played one full year on the PGA Tour in 1995 and in 35 starts made the cut 15 times while his best finish was a tie for 22nd at the Texas Open. Finished sixth on the Web.com Tour money list in 1994. Played in 134 Web.com Tour events from 1992-1994 and 1996-1998, winning twice and recording 20 top-10 finishes. Wins came in the 1994 Pensacola Open and Permian Basin Open. Has played in numerous tours worldwide and finished T-3rd in the Champions Tour Q-School in 2006. He has been on Tour ever since.
Claimed his first Champions Tour victory, defeating John Cook in a playoff at the Senior British Open at Royal Troon. Was the 18- and 36-hole leader, trailing Cook by just one stroke after 54 holes. Was still trailing by three strokes starting the back nine in the final round, but took advantage of Cook's misfortune on the final nine holes which included two bogeys and a double bogey. Cook's bogey on No. 18 set up a playoff, and Vaughan's 20-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole secured the title. He became the 22nd player in Champions Tour history to record a major championship for his first career win. Victory in Scotland came just weeks after his mother died in a car accident in Kansas while returning from watching him play in Iowa.
After that win, he has only had three top-10 finishes, the last T-5th at the 2010 Principal Charity Classic.
2012 Notes: Played in 14 events and had three top-20 finishes, with his best being in the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric, where he finished T-12th. Tried to regain his Champions Tour card at Q-School but finished T-41st.
2013 Notes: Played in 13 events, recording a T-9th at the Greater Hickory Classic for his only top-ten finish of the year. Finished the year 78th on the money list so he returned to Champions Tour Q-School finishing T-23rd.
In 2014 played three times, with his best finish coming at the Constellations Senior Players where he was T-54th.
