Craig Stadler

Stadler started playing golf at age 4 with the help of his father. Nicknamed "The Walrus," he has been one of golf's most colorful and popular personalities. The California native lives in Denver and is an ardent fan of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche. Son Kevin won the 2002 Colorado Open in a playoff with his father as his caddie and went on to play the PGA Tour, winning the 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Younger son Chris played college football at Lake Forest College in Illinois and served as his father's caddie when Craig won the B.C. Open in 2003.
Stadler was a two-time All-American selection at USC. Defeated David Strawn to win the 1973 U.S. Amateur at Inverness and was a 1975 U.S. Walker Cup team member. Won 13 times on the PGA Tour, with his biggest triumph coming at the 1982 Masters. After opening with a 75, he bounced back to win at Augusta National in a playoff over Dan Pohl. His B.C. Open win came at age 50, seven years after his previous victory at the 1996 Nissan Open. In 1992, he captured the NEC World Series of Golf by one stroke over Corey Pavin, 10 years after winning the same event. In 1982, made up five strokes with a closing 65, then defeated Raymond Floyd in a playoff. Was the PGA Tour's leading money-winner in 1982, thanks to four victories, his personal best for a single season. Finished 2nd on the money list in 1991 after winning the Tour Championship in a playoff with Russ Cochran at Pinehurst No. 2. Shot the low round of his career, an 11-under-par 61, on the final day of the 1990 Scandinavian Enterprise Open to win by four strokes over Craig Parry.
Played full-time on the PGA Tour between 1976 and 2003. In 652 events, he won 13 times, was runner-up 19 times, finished 3rd 16 times, and finished in the top 10 137 times. Had accumulated earnings of $10 million. Best year was in 1982, when he was the leading money-winner ($446,462).
Has nine career victories in 263 career PGA Tour Champions events.
2012 Notes: Made 17 PGA Tour Champions starts and had a pair of top-10 finishes for the first time since 2010: 7th at the Montreal Championship and T-7th at the 3M Championship. Finished the season 57th on the money list with $223,253 in earnings.
2013 Notes: Earned a spot among the top 30 (27th) on the money list for the first time since 2008, thanks largely to a victory midway through the year at the inaugural Encompass Championship. The victory in Illinois was his ninth career Champions Tour title and ended a winless drought of 8 years, 8 months, 28 days, an all-time Champions Tour record for the longest time between victories (the previous mark was held by J.C. Snead, at 6 years, 11 months, 7 days between the 1995 Ford Senior Players and the 2002 Greater Baltimore Classic). Also became the 21st winner over age 60 and the first since Bob Gilder at the 2011 Principal Charity Classic. It was the best of his four top-10 finishes, the most he had in a year since 2008.
2014 Notes: Competed in his 38th Masters but did not make the cut. That Masters start was his last. His son Kevin, who won the Waste Management Phoenix Open earlier in the year, also played at the Masters, making it the last major championship to have a father-son duo play in the same event (the only time to happen at the Masters). Had a top-10 finish, 3rd, when he teamed with Kirk Triplett at the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf.
2015 Notes: Played 16 events, with the best finish T-23rd at the Nature Valley First Tee Pebble Beach. Finished 91st on the money list.
2016 Notes: Played in just 11 events during the year, the fewest since he joined the Tour in 2003. His best finish came in April when he teamed with Kirk Triplett to finish T-15th at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf.
2017 Notes: Finished T-43rd at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, T-33rd at the Bass Pro Shops Legends with partner Kirk Triplett, and T-75th at Dick's Sporting Goods.
2018 Notes: Finished 43rd at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. Was T-33rd at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf with partner Bob Gilder. Has not played competitively since.
