Got his start in golf while serving as a caddie at Rhode Island C.C. Played collegiately at the University of Rhode Island and is a member of that school's Hall of Fame. Inducted into the New England PGA Hall of Fame after the 2000 season. Served as head professional at Crestwood C.C. in Rehoboth, MA, from 1983-96 before being elevated to Director of Golf in 1997.
Recorded 61 in 1982 Greater Hartford Open (tied for low round on PGA Tour that year); recorded 63 in 1979 Colgate Hall of Fame Classic at Pinehurst No. 2 Course. Runner-up behind Tommy Tolles in 1997 Beck's Open. Seven-time New England PGA Section Player of the Year (1985-96) and five-time New England PGA Section Champion (1985, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1996). Won the 1994 PGA Stroke Play Championship and 1983 PGA Match Play Championship. Six-time Rhode Island Open champion (1973, 1981, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996)
Played the PGA Tour on and off starting in 1978. Greatest number of appearances came during a four-year span from 1979-82, when he made 77 starts. Enjoyed his best year in 1980, when he won $31,509 and tied for second at the unofficial Disney World Team Championship.
Has been on the Champions Tour since 1997. Earned 2005 Player of the Year honors with career season that saw him, at age 58 also become the oldest player ever to claim the Arnold Palmer Award signifying the leading money-winner on the circuit. Was the only player to eclipse the $2 million mark in single-season earnings, making almost $400,000 more than his previous-best season (2000). Led the Charles Schwab Cup race for 17 consecutive weeks (19 overall), but got nipped in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship and placed second in the season-long competition.
In 2009, after battling nagging shoulder issues during the early part of the season, had his season cut short when he underwent surgery in mid-September to repair two tears in his left shoulder.
In 2010, made only 10 starts due to injuries. Made first Champions Tour appearance in mid-February at The ACE Group Classic and tied for 31st. Played in both the Allianz Championship (T47th) and the Toshiba Classic (T49th) before going to the sidelines once again following right-rotator cuff surgery in mid-March. Did not return to the Champions Tour until early August and managed a T-13th finish at the Boeing Classic in his second start back, his top effort of the year.
