Summerhays lists his father and brother as his heroes. Got his start in golf from his dad. Served a two-year Mormon mission from June 2003-June 2005 in Santiago, Chile, and is fluent in Spanish. Cites winning the 2007 Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational as his biggest thrill in golf. Was a member of the Davis High School (Kaysville, Utah) state championship basketball team. Is an avid table-tennis player. Made Web.com Tour history in 2007 when he became the first amateur winner at the 2007 Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational. Couldn't accept the $126,000 first prize, but earned a full exemption for the remainder of the season and all of 2008. Three days later, he made the decision to forego his senior season at BYU and turned professional. Posted four additional top-25 finishes, including a T-10th at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic. Completed his amateur career with a fourth-place showing at the NCAA Division I Championship and became one of 10 players to earn first-team Ping All-American honors.

Two months later, finished T-4th at the Memorial, his best result in 44 career PGA Tour starts. Played the final 49 holes without a bogey to finish 5th at the Greenbrier Classic, his fourth top-10 of the season. Ranked 99th in the FedExCup standings and 92nd on the money list.
2013 Notes: Made the cut in 15 of 26 starts during the season, finishing 40th in the FedExCup standings and 69th on the money list. Lost in a playoff to Woody Austin at the Sanderson Farms Championship for a career-best finish, one of four top-10 finishes on the season.
2014 Notes: Missed just five cuts in 27 starts and collected a career-best eight top-25 finishes. Highlight of his season was a T-2nd finish at the Valero Texas Open, one shot behind winner Steven Bowditch. For the third consecutive season, made it to the FedExCup Playoffs before finishing 57th in the final FedExCup standings after the BMW Championship. Also placed 69th on the money list and his earnings of $1,509,543 was his season career best and pushed him past the $1-million mark in season earnings for a third consecutive season.
2015 Notes: Had his best year on Tour, finishing 31st in the FedExCup rankings and 60th on the money list. His earnings of $1,633,957 was his best year ever on the PGA Tour. In 29 starts, he made 21 cuts and finished in the top-10, five times. Best result was T-4th at the Valero Texas Open, followed by a T-6th at the Barclays.
2016 Notes: First top-10 resut was achieved at the U.S. Open, where he finished T-8th. Next one was a 3rd-place finish at the PGA Championship. Ended the year with 28 starts and ranked 65th in the FedExCup standings and 45th on the money list.
2017 Notes: Best finish, T-10th at the Memorial. Went into the final round leading but shot 78 in the final round to drop down the leaderboard.
