He got his start in golf from his grandfather. He previously worked as a bank teller and would probably be working as a stock trader if he weren't playing professional golf.

He won his first Tour event at the 2013 Turner Plumbing Victorian PGA Championship. In 1997 joined and played on the Canadian Tour until he qualified for the Korn Ferry Tour in 2001. He played full-time on that tour in 2001, '04, '05, '07-2010. He played in 183 events making 111 cuts and winning $1,014,628. He was in the top ten 24 times with a win at the 2005 Gila River Golf Classic. He was runner-up 4 times and third 4 times. His best year was in 2005 in 25 starts, made 20 cuts, and had six top-ten finishes, including a victory in the Gila River Classic. They had two top-tens, T-9th at the Buick Championship and 7th at the Valero Texas Open, but with earnings that year of $425,228, he was 160th on the money list. After missing the cut in that year's last event, McKenzie never played again on the PGA Tour, returning to the Korn Ferry Tour for the next four years.
