His father, Todd, lettered for the Georgia men's golf team from 1985-88 and was a captain for the 1987 and 1988 teams. Today, Todd is the PGA Tour's RSM Classic tournament director on St. Simons Island. His favorite golf memory is attending a practice round at the 2011 Masters Tournament and wondering what it would be like to play in it.
Thompson was born in Georgia but moved to Alabama and attended the Lee-Scott Academy, where he helped win six consecutive team state titles. He captured the individual state title in 2013 and 2015. He played collegiately at the University of Georgia for four seasons between 2017 and 2021, where he earned All-America First Team laurels his final two years, and was the 2021 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year. He won four individual titles at Georgia, including the NCAA Regionals in 2019 and 2021. Thompson won the 2020 Jones Cup Invitational and was runner-up at the event in 2019 and 2020. He was the stroke-play medalist at the 2019 Western Amateur. Thompson reached the Round of 64 in the 2020 U.S. Amateur, shortly after being a quarterfinalist in the Western Amateur. The Golf Coaches Association of America named him a first-team All-America. He was one of five finalists for the Jack Nicklaus Award and one of three finalists for the Haskins Award; both awards are for the top players in college golf. He played in the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup and the 2021 Walker Cup. He made his first U.S. Open start by virtue of being among the top 7 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking as of the Aug. 19 deadline (No. 3). He missed the cut. Thompson reached number one in the World Amateur Golf Ranking in November 2020 and March 2021, and finished number two in the inaugural PGA Tour University Class of 2021
He also finished 23rd in the 2020 PGA Tour's RSM Classic at Sea Island Golf Club and competed in the 2020 Puerto Rico Open. Thompson turned professional after his graduation in 2021 and played in six PGA Tour events, making the cut in four of them. His best finish was T-31st at the Barbasol Championship. At the end of 2021, he finished T-39th at the Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School.
2022 Notes: Played in 21 Korn Ferry Tour events, making 13 cuts with four top-ten finishes. He earned his first PGA Tour card with a 16th-place finish on the season-long Korn Ferry Tour Eligibility Points List, recording a win at the REX Hospital Open on his 23rd birthday. Youngest of the 25 regular season graduates, as he was 23 years, 2 months, and 30 days old at the conclusion of the season. One of four members of the inaugural PGA Tour University Class of 2021 who earned PGA Tour cards via the Korn Ferry Tour in 2022. He also played in three PGA Tour events, making the cut in two of them, best finish of T-35th at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
2023 Notes: Played in 30 PGA Tour events, making 21 cuts with two top-ten finishes. He was 73rd in the FedExCup race. He opened the season, finishing T-9th at the Fortinet Championship. Made a big splash in his 7th start of the year at the American Express. He held at least a share of the lead after each of the first three rounds and went on to finish 2nd, one shot behind champion Jon Rahm. Earned his first career top-five on the PGA Tour. Made five eagles (2 in R1, 3 in R2), becoming the seventh player to make five eagles in a 72-hole event on record since the record was kept in 1983 and to the time of the American Express. He struggled after that, and his best finish the rest of the year was T-15th in the World Wide Technology Championship.
2024 Notes: The year started out slowly. In his first ten starts, his best finish was T-15th at the WM Phoenix Open. He got together with Craig Allan, who is the Director of the Sea Island Golf Performance Center, and they worked on changing the specs on his irons and changed out his ball. He noticed an improvement starting at the Corales Puntacana Championship, where he finished T-18th. He was T-2nd at the Myrtle Beach Classic, six shots back of the winner Chris Gotterup. Things got better when he was T-9th at the U.S. Open and then T-2nd at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, a shot back of the winner Cam Davis. Thompson got off to a quick start, shooting 63 in the first round of the John Deere. With rounds of 67-62, he went into the final round two ahead. He got off to a fast start, birdieing five of the first six holes and shot 29 on the front nine. He went on to shot 64 and won by four shots.
