Hubert Green

Started to play golf at age 5, he loved playing basketball and football, until he realized he wasn't good enough or big enough to play anything but golf. He turned pro in 1970 after graduating from Florida State and worked for a summer as an assistant pro at Merion Golf Club, site of 4 U.S. Opens. He passed the Qualifying school in the fall of 1970 and in his rookie year won the Houston Open by beating Don January in a playoff. Although he had a disappointing 1972, he bounced back in '73 to win 2 tournaments (Tallahassee and B.C. Open) and placed 11th on the money list. In 1974 Green won four tournaments (Bob Hope, Greater Jacksonville, Philadelphia, and Walt Disney Team with Mac McLendon) and more than $211,000, finishing behind only Johnny Miller and Jack Nicklaus on the money list. In 1975 he added another tournament (Southern Open) and $113,569 to his piggybank. Green continued his stretch of devastation in 1976 when during one three week period he won three straight tournaments (Doral Eastern, Greater Jacksonville and Sea Pine Heritage Classic). The highlight of his career came at the 1977 U.S. Open when he brought his unorthodox swing to Southern Hills to record a wire-to-wire, one stroke victory. He continued to have success on tour, despite having shoulder problems, which was corrected, in surgery in 1983, winning six more tournaments. His last PGA Tour victory came in 1985 at the PGA, when he fought off Lee Trevino for a two-stroke win. He nearly made it 20 victories in the spring of 1986, but Andy Bean caught him on the closing holes in the Doral-Eastern Open and then won with a birdie on the fourth extra hole...

Had his season cut short in June after being diagnosed with a cancerous growth on his left tonsil and back of his tongue during a routine dental examination in May. After consulting with specialists, opted to begin radiation and chemotherapy sessions in early July and missed the remainder of the year while undergoing nearly six weeks of treatment for the disease at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL. Lost over 30 pounds during the treatment...

Returned to the Champions Tour at the season-opening MasterCard Championship in Hawaii (37th), but was forced to miss almost the next three months of the season after undergoing additional tests and treatments for a cancerous growth on his throat and tongue...Despite a loss of strength and weight, came back again in mid-April at the Blue Angels Classic.
