Ignacio Garrido

Greatest moment of his golfing career arrived in May 2003 when he produced a superb performance to win the PGA Championship at Wentworth Club. Paired with Ernie Els in the final round, the eldest son of Antonio Garrido, who played in the first
Ryder Cup Matches open to Continental golfers, outshone his illustrious playing partner before beating another South African, Trevor Immelman, at the first play-off hole. Won his first European Tour title in 1997 in the Volvo German Open, the same year as he followed in his father's footsteps when he played in The Ryder Cup Matches at Valderrama, with Antonio on the bag. That was a role reversal of earlier years when he caddied for his father during the 1980s including when Garrido Snr finished 12th in the 1985 PGA Championship. Did not enjoy the most productive 2004 season, finishing 141st on the Volvo Order of Merit. Boyhood hero was Seve Ballesteros and in his amateur days won the English Open Amateur Stroke Play whilst on leave from National Service. Turned professional in 1993 with a handicap of plus four and began his predilection for wearing long sleeved golf shirts on the course. Started because of his father's clothing deal which supplied both long and short sleeved shirts. Antonio did not like the long sleeved ones, so Ignacio took them and got into a habit of wearing them which has continued to this day. Outside interests include the martial art of Taekwondo and a collection of insects which he keeps in his Madrid home.
