Player Notes: Burke won 16 times in his Tour career, including the 1956 Masters and PGA Championship. He was also named Player of the Year in 1956. He played on 1951, '53, '55, '57, and '59 Ryder Cup teams and was a playing captain in 1957 and captain in 1973. He also won the 1952 Vardon Trophy. Burke is one of the men behind the creation of the Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas, which has hosted the U.S. Open, Ryder Cup, Tour Championship, Houston Open, U.S. Amateur, and at the end of 2020, the U.S. Women's Open. Burke still plays a key role in the running of the club, but in October of 2021, he sold the club to his son, ending his 64-year ownership of the club he founded with fellow Masters Champion Jimmy Demaret in 1957. By selling it to his son, it's a way to keep it in the family and as part of the agreement will be the chairman of the board of directors for the rest of his life.
Burke is the second Masters champion to reach 96 years old. The first was Gene Sarazen, who was 97 years, 2 months, 16 days old when he passed away in 1999. On the first day of the 2023 Masters, Burke will be 100 years, 2 months, and 8 days old, the oldest Masters champion.
