James Sugrue

Sugrue started golf at an early age and, along with being a hurler, decided to play golf at the age of 15.
Defeated Euan Walker in the finals 1-up to win the 2019 Amateur Championship held at Portmarnock Links, just outside of Dublin. Sugrue became the first Irishman to win the Amateur since Alan Dunbar did it in 2012 and the eight Irish winners since World War II (Joe Carr won it three times).
Success at The Amateur brought with it exemptions into the 2019 British Open at Royal Portrush, where he missed the cut, and the 2020 Masters and US Open.
The Amateur victory set him to play on the GB&I Walker Cup team at Hoylake, where he lost both of his matches. He also played at the 2019 U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst, advancing to the round of 64, where he lost to Walker Cup teammate Alex Fitzpatrick 5 & 4. He also represented the Republic of Ireland at the 2019 European Amateur Team Championship in which Ireland finished 5th in the matches at Ljunghusen Golf Club in Sweden.
Going into 2020, Sugrue planned to turn professional after the U.S. Open. He got to play in the Oman Open and missed the cut. As COVID-19 hit, Sugrue had to change plans. When events got started in June, he wasn't able to play in any events because of travel restrictions by the Republic of Ireland. He wasn't able to travel to the United States for The Memorial and couldn't play at the Brabazon Trophy, the Amateur Championship and the European Amateur Championship in France. He was able to play in the Mullingar Scratch Trophy in Ireland in August and finished 3rd, four shots back of winner Jason Rackard. He finally traveled to New York to play at the U.S. Open, but shot 78-79 and missed the cut. While there, in a conversation with Lee Westwood, the topic of the Irish Open came up. When Westwood found out that Sugrue wasn't playing in it, Westwood then took it on himself to go public with the news. Officials of the Irish Open saw the error in not inviting the Irishman, who had won the Amateur in Ireland, and sent Sugrue a last-minute invitation to play. Sugrue changed his plans and went from New York to Northern Ireland to play at Galgorm Castle. With rounds of 67-72, he was just four strokes off the lead. He became the first Cork golfer to make the cut at an Irish Open in 20 years. John McHenry accomplished the feat in 1998 en route to finishing T-3rd. Sugrue finished 66th and during the week, gave subtle hints that he will turn professional after the Masters.
