Williamson played baseball and hockey growing up. He finished his career as a catcher at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., with a .321 batting average and 18 home runs. As a forward on the hockey team, he scored 60 goals and 129 points.
Jay Williamson spent time on both the Web.com Tour and the PGA Tour since turning pro in 1990. The Trinity College graduate missed the cut in the 1999 U.S. Open but would finish T-20th at Olympia Fields Country Club in 2003 and T-39th in the 2008 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. Disqualified from 2001 U.S. Open for signing an incorrect scorecard. He played on the PGA Tour in 1995, 1996 and between 1999 and 2011 playing in 377 events. He made 195 cuts and tallied 50 top-25 finishes and 18 top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour. His best finish was 2nd at the 2007 Travelers Championship and the 2008 John Deere Classic. In both cases, he lost in a playoff. In his 16 year career, he earned $5,944,298 and his best year on tour was in 2003 when he finished 101st on the money list.
Played on the Web.Com Tour in 1998, 2007 and 2011. Played in 86 events and made the cut 41 times. Had 22 top-25 finishes and 12 top-10 finishes, winning the 2007 Fort Smith Classic.
Went to Champions Tour Q-School at the end of 2016 and finished T-24th.
In 2011 with young kids at home looking for him every day, he decided it was time to put away the golf clubs and try something else. That would be insurance, he worked first for BryanMark Group and then in 2018 formed his own company Double Eagle Wealth Solutions. But when he got to his 50th birthday in 2017 he realized that he still had some game and that the PGA Tour Champions could be the answer. At the same time, Williamson realized that the biggest problem was not playing on the PGA Tour Champions but to being able to qualify for the tour. Since he really had no status from his PGA Tour days, he had to qualify and in December of 2016, he tried only to finish T-24th. Only the top-five get fully exempt status, he was only given limited status which meant he had to Monday qualify. In February of 2017, he tried to qualify for Boca Raton and Naples and didn't make it. He did have some success he won the Arizona State Senior Open, but at that time he felt that it just wasn't going to happen and it was best to end up back in St. Louis and back to his company and family. Later in the summer he did qualifying and play in the U.S. Open, missing the cut. And again at the end of the year, he tried PGA Tour Champions Q-School but was T-40th. In 2018 he got into the Boca Raton Championship and finishing T-39th but that would be the only start he made on tour. Again he tried Q-School, this time he had to attend both stages and in the final stage failed again finishing T-57th. So it was back home to St. Louis and he did qualify for this year's U.S. Senior Open for a second time.
