Joseph Bramlett

Joseph Bramlett grew up in Saratoga, Calif., attended Stanford University and now lives in San Jose. His journey is one of perseverance. The 31-year-old graduated from Stanford in 2010 and played in his first U.S. Open the following week at Pebble Beach.
Bramlett helped the Stanford golf team to its eighth NCAA title in 2007. A six-time U.S. Amateur participant (reached the third round of match play in 2010) who, at the time, was the youngest player to qualify for the championship at the age of 14 in 2002. Bramlett also played in the 2003 and 2005 U.S. Junior Amateurs. One of his career holes-in-one came at the fifth hole at Pebble Beach in the semifinals of the 2005 California State Amateur.
He won the 2007 Puerto Rico Classic for his first collegiate victory and was a second-team All-American and second-team All-Pac 10 Conference selection as a freshman.
After graduating from Stanford, Bramlett shot 79-75-154 to miss the cut at Pebble Beach in the 2010 U.S. Open. He made it to the PGA Tour in 2011 and dropped down to the Web.com Tour in 2012. In 2011, he was one of two PGA Tour golfers of African-American descent, alongside Tiger Woods.
Bramlett made only three starts from July 2013 to January 2018. His back flared up on the range at the 2013 Utah Championship presented by Zions Bank, causing a lateral spine dysfunction that led to lingering back problems for the next handful of years. He often considered surgery but that meant ending his career. "Seeing just about every surgeon in the country, great surgeons, but the only type of surgery they can do, putting rods in my lower back to stabilize my lower spine, I would lose mostly all my mobility," Bramlett said after his final round in the 2018 Panama Championship. "It would end my career, and that's not an option."
He ultimately fought through various stages rehabilitation in hopes of returning to full health and the goal of again reaching the PGA Tour.
Bramlett had a healthy 2018, finishing with five top-10s in 23 starts on the Web.com Tour. He narrowly missed advancing to the PGA Tour and returned to the Web for the 2019 season.
In 2019, he has made eight cuts in 13 events on the Web.com Tour, including four top-15 finishes. His best finish was T-7th at the Savannah Golf Championship.
Bramlett sunk a 6-foot par putt on the first extra hole at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Rockville, Md. to survive a three-man playoff for the final two spots. He shot a 71-71-142 to advance to his second U.S. Open and 11th USGA championship. Bramlett will have his swing coach, John Scott Rattan, on the bag for him.
