Mike Weir

At age 13, left-handed Mike Weir sought advice from Jack Nicklaus. In a letter, he asked whether he should switch to playing right-handed. The Golden Bear's response was to stick with his natural swing. Weir was the medalist at the 1998 PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament. With his victory at the 2003 Masters, he became the second left-hander to win a major championship, joining New Zealand's Bob Charles, who won the 1963 British Open (has since been joined by Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson). Member of 2000, '03, '05, '07 and '09 Presidents Cup teams. Played on the Canadian Tour between 1993 and '97. In 1997, he finished 1st in earnings with $80,696 (Canadian dollars), winning twice.
Weir's greatest victory was in the 2003 Masters. The last of his eight victories on the PGA Tour was in 2007, he has suffered from several injuries in trying to make a comeback. Has played in 456 PGA Tour events, winning eight times, runner-up 10 times, and 3rd eight times. He turned 50 and joined PGA Tour Champions in 2020.
2014 Notes: Finished 2nd at the HP Byron Nelson Championship for his first top-10 finish since a 6th-place effort at the 2010 Humana Challenge. He lost by two strokes to Brendon Todd. Posted rounds of 68-66-67-67, marking the first of four back-to-back rounds in the 60s since he posted all four rounds in the 60s at the 2013 John Deere Classic, where he finished T-27th. His last round in the 60s before the HP Byron Nelson Championship came in January at the Humana Challenge (a second-round 69). Still wasn't able to make it into the FedExCup playoffs, finishing 139th in the standings. The last time he competed in the playoffs was 2009.
2015 Notes: Nagging wrist and elbow woes continued to bother Weir as he pulled out of the Northern Trust Open during the second round and after the first round the following week at the Honda Classic. These new health problems were caused by overuse as he was working hard on his game. Played in 15 events, but with little success. After withdrawing from the John Deere, he took a leave.
2016 Notes: Weir worked with David Leadbetter over the winter and returned to golf at Abu Dhabi. In 13 worldwide starts, didn't make it to the weekend.
2017 Notes: Played in 10 events around the world and made three cuts. Best results were a T-35th at the Fiji International and a T-15th at the Australian PGA Championship.
