Player Notes: In 1971, 13-year-old Faldo watched the Masters and, inspired by Jack Nicklaus, decided he wanted to play golf and become a professional. Until then, cycling was his main pursuit. His mother, Joyce, organized a course of six golf lessons at Welwyn Garden City, and within two years, he had become an accomplished player. He won the British Youths Amateur and English Amateur Championship three years later. He turned professional at age 19.
In 1977, he finished 8th on the European Tour's Order of Merit, and by the next year, had shown that he had a claim to be one of Europe's best with a win at the British PGA Championship and a 3rd-place finish on the Order of Merit. Although Faldo would continue to win regularly in Europe and even won the 1984 Heritage Classic in America, he decided in 1985 to completely overhaul his swing, working with David Leadbetter for two years before he saw the desired results -- a swing that would hold up under major championship pressure. At the 1987 British Open at Muirfield, Faldo produced a final round that was a clinic in control, translating 18 straight pars into his first major championship win, edging Paul Azinger.
Throughout his career, Faldo has focused on the majors. His record in the four big tournaments is excellent, with three wins apiece at the Masters and the British Open, 2nds at both the U.S. Open and PGA Championships, and 26 career top-10s.
* Winner of 30 European Tour events, including 1987, '90 and '92 British Open and 1989, '90 and '96 Masters.
* Led the European Tour in earnings in 1983 and '92.
* Member of 11 European Ryder Cup teams (1977, '79, '81, '83, '85, '87, '89, '91, '93, '95 and '97).
* Captain of the European Ryder Cup team in 2008.
* Knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2009.
* Was a ABC Sports announcing team member for two years and joined CBS as its lead analyst in 2007. Also an analyst on Golf Channel. He retired from TV in 2023.
Since the 2010 British Open at St. Andrews, where he missed the cut after posting rounds of 72-81 on the Old Course, Faldo didn't play again on the PGA Tour, Champions Tour, or European Tour until he missed the cut at the British Open at Muirfield in 2013. Also finished T-53rd at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic.
2014 Notes: Faldo missed the cut at the RBC Heritage, The Greenbrier, where he has a home, and the Scottish Open, British Open, and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
2015 Notes: Played in three events, finishing T-64th at the Senior PGA Championship and missing the cut at the British Open and Senior Open.
2017 Notes: After no events in 2016, he played at the BMW South African Open, where he missed the cut. On PGA Tour Champions, played in seven events, with his best finish a T-21st at the Shaw Charity Classic.
2018 Notes: Missed the cut at the Senior Open Championship, T-76th at the SAS Championship. He had played in the PNC Championship, last time was in December of 2022 when he played with his son Matthew, and they finished T-15th.
