One of the top golfers to come out of Wales, he has represented his country nine times in the World Cup, but it was in another team competition. He learned to play at Pontypridd with his father and brothers and was inspired when he saw his first big tournament, the 1978 Dunlop Masters at St Pierre, won by Tommy Horton.
He won the Duncan Putter and W.I. Tucker trophies. With his third-place finishes in the 1989 Berkshire and Brabazon trophies, he decided to turn professional. Winner of the Welsh Region Order of Merit a year later, came in second in the 1991 World Cup with Ian Woosnam. He achieved his lifelong ambition when he qualified in 10th place for the 2002 Ryder Cup Matches and made a phenomenal debut at The Belfry by defeating World No. 2-ranked Phil Mickelson in the singles to secure an invaluable point. He secured his place on the European Ryder Cup Team in 2001, winning the Algarve Open de Portugal for a second time to help underline his credentials. He created a significant impact in 2000, finishing runner-up on four occasions, most notably in the WGC-NEC Invitational when he T-2nd behind Tiger Woods to collect the biggest check of his career. He credits his more robust mental approach to his 10-year association with psychologist Alan Fine, who now lives in America and flies to Akron to assist during the WGC-NEC International event. He suffered a hand injury in 1992.
The following year he claimed the biggest win of his career when he completed a bold wire-to-wire win in the 2003 Smurfit Kappa European Open. After a brief sojourn in the United States returned to his home Tour and was in danger of losing his card in 2010 when 127th on The Race to Dubai heading into October. He earned euro118,940 in his following three events to move to 100th and be assured of his card, and he just retained it in 2011 and 2012, finishing 118th place - the last safe spot and 103rd, respectively.
Did play on the PGA Tour in 2003 (9 events), 2004 (12 events), and 2005 (25 events). In 67 PGA Tour starts, he was in the top 10 twice, T-2nd in the 2000 WGC NEC Invitational, and T-10th in the 2003 Open Championship. His last full year on the European Tour was in 2014; in his 25 years on that tour, he played in 571 events, finishing in the money 349 times. It was in the top 10 50 times and earned euros7,329,862.
Upon turning 50 in October 2016, he played on the European Senior Tour in the last two events of the year. He made a solid start to life on the European Senior Tour, finishing 2nd at the Senior Italian Open and T-4th in the MCB Tour Championship. At the end of 2016 went to Florida for Champions Tour Q-School and was tied for 1st with Scott Parel, thus becoming fully exempt on the Champions Tour in 2017.
2017 Notes: Played in 18 events, finishing with two top-10s, T-5th at the Pure Insurance Championship, and T-6th at the Senior Open Championship. He was 56th on the money list and, in return to Q-School, finished T-29th, thus losing his Senior tour card. He played in five Staysure European Seniors Tour events, winning the WINSTONgolf Senior Open. He won euro112,711 and was 12th on the money list.
2018 Notes: Played in 15 Staysure Tour events with nine top-10 finishes. Was runner-up three times, T-2nd at the Swiss Seniors Open, a shot back of winner Jean-Francois. He lost on the first playoff hole to Roger Champman, who made a birdie. He was 3rd at the Senior Italian Open and T-3rd at the Scottish Senior Open.
