Started hitting golf balls at a beach near his house when he was 7. His father, Gu-huieun, has provided guidance by caddieing for him early in his career. Enjoyed a strong amateur career in which he won the 2005 Korean Amateur Championship and Korean Junior Amateur. Was part of the Korean national team in 2006 and ?07. In 2006, finished T-3rd at the Maekyung Open while he was still an amateur, and followed that up with another top 10 at the Korean Open. Achieved remarkable success in his rookie season on the Asian Tour when, at 17, he won his first title with a victory at the 2008 Midea China Classic. Made an immediate impact after getting his Asian Tour card through the Qualifying School when, in addition to winning his first title, he claimed three runner-up finishes and an additional six top-10 finishes in 16 events.
Showed his immense talent by putting together seven top-10 results in 2009, with his best finish being a T-5th at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters.
Won the European Tour's Maybank Malaysian Open in March 2010, defeating fellow Korean K.J. Choi with a stunning birdie on the final hole. Also placed 4th at the 2010 Omega European Masters. The win made him the second-youngest champion (18 years, 282 days) ever on the European Tour after Danny Lee (18 years, 213 days). Ended his 2010 European Tour season ranked 34th in The Race to Dubai with Euro869,921. Was first on the Asian Tour order of merit in 2010, which secured a spot at the 2011 British Open Championship.
Played more in Europe and the United States in 2011, which meant he only played five Asian Tour events. Best result was 2nd at the CJ Invitational, as he finished 31st on the tour?s money list. On the European Tour in 2011, finished 86th in The Race to Dubai, along with three top-10 finishes. At the end of the year, earned his PGA Tour card by finishing T-3rd at Q-School on the strength of a third round 64.
2012 Notes: Finished 37th in the FedExCup standings and 49th in the money race in rookie season. Had three top-10 finishes and established a new career-best finish in late June/early July outside Washington, D.C., when he finished T-4th at the AT&T National at Congressional CC.
2013 Notes: Struggled with putting during his sophomore campaign, recording only 11 made cuts in 25 starts. Started season with a T-27th at the Farmers Insurance Open and T-16th at Northern Trust Open (two of his first four starts) before a string of seven missed cuts in eight starts. Making his 32nd start since his last top-10 finish (T-4th at the 2012 AT&T National), finished T-7th at the Reno-Tahoe Open. Finished 160th in FedExCup points, and 153rd on the money list with earnings of $391,763. This sent him into the Web.com Tour finals, where he posted a T-7th in the first Web.com Tour Finals event, the Hotel Fitness Championship. Earned his first career win in the U.S. with a dominating, five-shot win at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship, the third of the Tour's four finals. First-place check of $180,000 moved him to 1st on the Finals' priority ranking.
2014 Notes: In his 78th career PGA Tour start, posted first- and third-round, 7-under 65s at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to claim his first Tour win. Was the only player to remain bogey-free through 54 holes at TPC Louisiana, as he became the 14th player since 1990 to make the Zurich Classic his first win. With the title, became the first player outside of Australia and the U.S. to win on Tour in 2013-14. Remembered the victims of the South Korean ferry tragedy earlier in the month by wearing a ribbon on his hat all week. For the year, had three top-10 finishes: T-10th at Farmers Insurance Open and T-9th at Deutsche Bank Championship. Made it through three Playoff events, finishing the year 35th in the FedExCup rankings and 39th on the money list. Ended the year with a runner-up finish at the Kolon Korea Open.
2015 Notes: Played in 21 events and made 13 cuts. Best finish and only top-10 was a T-3rd at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Finished 134th in the FedExCup standings. Was 127th entering the Wyndham Championship but could not play due to back pain and consequently dropped in the standings and missed the FedExCup Playoffs. Playing on the OneAsia Tour in late-November 2014, finished runner-up to countryman Seung Hyuk Kim at the Kolon Korea Open.
2016 Notes: Best finish was at the FedEx St. Jude Classic finishing T-7th.
