Scott Simpson

Got started in golf through his father, Joe, who was an accomplished amateur player. Father lost to Bo Williams in the final of the 1989 USGA Senior Amateur at Lochinvar in Houston. Played on victorious USA Walker Cup Team in 1977 and was an NCAA champion and All-American selection at USC in 1976 and '77. Was one of the first PGA Tour players to live in Hawaii and commute, but travel got to be too much and he moved back to San Diego in 1994.
Played on the PGA Tour regularly from 1979-2005. Had 600 career starts with seven wins, 15 runner-ups, 10 third-place and 77 top-10 finishes. Accumulated earnings of over $6.8 million. One of the most consistent players on tour, he finished in the top 125 on the money list between 1979 and 1996 and in 11 of those years was in the top 50.
His biggest victory came at the 1987 U.S. Open, where he trailed Tom Watson by one stroke heading into the final round at The Olympic Club. He closed with a 68, which included three birdies on the back nine that led him to a one-stroke victory. Also won the Greater Greensboro Open that year on way to a fourth-place finish on the money list, his highest ranking ever.
Lost an 18-hole playoff to Payne Stewart in the 1991 U.S. Open at Hazeltine National. Last Tour victory came in the 1998 Buick Invitational when he defeated Skip Kendall with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Posted a final-round 64 and came from eight strokes back entering the final round, at the time matching the PGA Tour's best comeback since 1970. The victory came with former San Diego Chargers quarterback Stan Humphries on his bag.
His first tour victory came in 1980 Western Open, by five strokes over Andy Bean. Won his second tournament on Tour by five shot at the 1984 Manufacturers Hanover Westchester Classic. Defeated Bob Tway in playoff to win the 1989 BellSouth Atlanta Classic. Was unable to play on the PGA Tour in 2000 due to a broken ankle he suffered while skiing during the New Year's holiday. Underwent surgery in August 2000, which involved placing seven screws into the ankle.
Earned first and only PGA Tour Champions victory at the 2006 Walmart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. In 2011, played in all 21 official events for which he was eligible but did not post a top-10 finish for the first time for six full PGA Tour Champions seasons.
2012 Notes: Played in 20 events, finishing in the top 25 twice. Teamed with Loren Roberts to finish T-13th in the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf. Was T-24th at the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn.
2013 Notes: Was 64th on the money list in 23 starts. Only top 10 came in March when he closed with a 65 on Sunday at the Toshiba Classic to move into a T-8th. It was his best PGA Tour Champions finish since a T-6th in the 2010 First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
2014 Notes: Lone top-10 finish in 21 starts came in September when he was on the leader board through 36 holes of the Quebec Championship. Contended early in the final round at La Tempete before eventually posting a 71 and placing T-10th. Teamed with Wayne Levi for a T-15th finish at the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf.
2015 Notes: Only played in 7 events, best finish T-26th at the Bass Pro Shops Golf with Wayne Levi. Also made the cut at the U.S. Senior Open in Sacramento, finishing T-50th.
2016 Notes: Played in just 13 events during the year with his best finish at the Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship where three consecutive rounds of 69 led to a T-28th finish in Victoria, Canada.
2017 Notes: Played in just 6 events during the year, teamed with Wayne Levi to finish T-36th at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf, his best start of the year.
