As a youngster he always wanted to be a pilot in the Australian Air Force. He didn't start to play golf until he was 14 years old and then turned professional two-years later. He worked in pro shops, but realized it wasn't the life he wanted. He applied, and got his amateur status back. He played in a lot of tournaments in Queensland and then turned professional again in 1978. Later in 1978, the 22 year old was down on his luck, and with only three dollars in his pocket won a small, 36-hole Australian event, winning $700. The next week he won the West Lakes Classic. He continued to play on the Australian tour, and despite being runner-ups in the 1979 New South Wales Open and the 1982 Queensland Open and Air New Zealand Open he needed a change of pace. So in 1983, he played on the European Tour and showed some success, finishing 48th on the European Order of Merit list. The next year his earnings leaped, thanks to a victory in the German Open, and he decided to play on the American tour. In Q-school at LaQuinta, he secured his playing privileges with a 6th place finish. His first four years on Tour was a struggle, but he found his touch in 1989, winning a playoff against Ronnie Black in the Manufacturers Hanover Westchester Classic. A month later he lost the British Open in a playoff to mark Calcavecchia. But the highlight of his career has to be his victory in the 1990 PGA Championship, as he won by three with a total of 6-under-par 282.
