Romain Langasque

Langasque earned a spot in the Open Championship field by finishing in the top 30 of the 2019 Race to Dubai.
Langasque discovered golf at age 2 when he went to a golf course with his father. By age 4, he made his first par. He got his first handicap when he was 5. From then on, he was hooked on the game. He continued to practice each day at the golf course of Saint-Donat located in Grasse (south of France) with coach Philippe Larvaron until he turned 13. He could train with the French Federation and enter tournaments at that time. In 2013, he was able to obtain a French diploma called a baccalaureate.
Maybe it was nothing more than a coincidence, but 16 years after Jean van de Velde almost won the British Open at Carnoustie, the French connection played out again at the famous course when Langasque became the Amateur champion there. The 20-year-old defeated Scotland's Grant Forrest in the 36-hole final, 4 & 2, to earn not just a place at the British Open at St. Andrews in the summer of 2015 but also the chance to play at the Masters and U.S. Open.
The only two previous French winners of the British Open in its 120-year history were Philippe Ploujoux in 1981 and Julien Guerrier in 2006. "This is just a dream for me," said the player ranked 72nd in the amateur world standings at the time. "When I played my practice round, I was maybe six or seven over, but the more the competition advanced, the more I played well."
Before his win at the end of 2014, Langasque tried for a European Tour card but fell short at the second stage of qualifying school. A month after winning the Amateur, Langasque finished T-65th at the British Open at St. Andrews. He strongly considered turning professional, but with the change in European Challenge Tour regulations allowing amateurs to be ranked in their series (also allowing them to keep the points if they turn pro), he decided to turn pro after the Masters (Finished T-39th in that Masters). At the start of March, Langasque won the Spanish International Amateur, defeating Scott Gregory 9 & 8 in the finals, and then finished 2nd at the Barclays Kenya Open on the European Challenge Tour, three shots behind winner Sebastian Soderberg.
Victor Dubuisson mentors Langasque, and they share the same coach, Benoit Ducoulombier. Dubuisson sent Langasque a text on the eve of the Amateur Championship final with the promise of a few added perks to accompany the prestigious trophy.
