Catriona Matthew

Matthew started playing golf at age five and credits her family as the individuals most influencing her career. She married her husband, Graeme Matthew, on Feb. 26, 1994, and gave birth to their first daughter, Katie, in 2006 and second daughter, Sophie Lauren, in 2009. She won her first women's professional major championship (Women's British Open) 11 weeks after Sophie Lauren was born.
She enjoyed a successful amateur career while growing up in Scotland. Was the 1986 Scottish Girls champion and the 1988-1989 Scottish Under-21 Stroke Play champion. Captured the Scottish Amateur title in 1991 and in 1993 and 1994. She also won the 1993 British Amateur title and was a member of the 1990, 1992, and 1994 Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup Teams.
When she's not playing golf, she enjoys all sports and traveling. She says the top three things on her bucket list include climbing Mount Everest, attending the Olympic Games, and learning to fly a plane. Played for Scotland in the 18-under European Badminton Championship in 1985. Graduated from Stirling University in 1992 with a degree in accounting.
In 1994, she qualified for the Tour by tying for 5th at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, earning exempt status for the 1995 LPGA season.
In 1995, she had emergency surgery in March to remove an ovarian cyst and returned to the LPGA Tour to compete in the Sprint Championship one month later. Her best finish was T-12th at the Weetabix Women's British Open.
In 1996, her best finish was T-5th at the State Farm Rail Classic. She also won the Australian Ladies Open on the Women Professional Golfers' European Tour.
In 1997, she posted a season-best finish of T-2nd at the Edina Realty LPGA Classic.
In 1998, she recorded eight top-20 finishes, including T-13th at the Nabisco Dinah Shore and T-14th at the du Maurier Classic. Won the 1998 ELPGA McDonald's Championship on the European Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour and qualified for her first European Solheim Cup Team.
In 1999, she recorded seven top-10 finishes, including 2nd place at the SAFECO Classic.
In 2000, she posted seven top-10 finishes, including 5th at the season-opening The Office Depot and the Australian Ladies Masters. Crossed the $1 million mark in career earnings after a T-10th at the Japan Airlines Big Apple Classic.
In 2001, became a Rolex First-Time Winner at the Cup Noodles Hawaiian Ladies Open. Recorded her first LPGA career hole-in-one during the second round of the Weetabix Women's British Open.
In 2002, she placed T-2nd at both the Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Open and Mobile LPGA Tournament of Champions.
In 2003, her best finish was 3rd place at the LPGA Corning Classic. With a 3-1-1 record, she helped lead the European Team to victory in The Solheim Cup and sank the putt (in her singles match against Rosie Jones) that clinched the Cup for the European Team.
In 2004, defeated Hee-Won Han on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the Wendy's Championship for Children, her second LPGA victory. Recorded a total of six top-10 finishes, including a T-5th at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, where she crossed $3 million in career earnings; tied her career-low 64 during the first round of the Samsung World Championship. Carded the second hole-in-one of her LPGA career during the third round of the Weetabix Women's British Open (her first hole-in-one was also at Sunningdale Golf and Country Club, in 2001, but on a different hole).
In 2005, recorded 12 top-10 finishes, including six 3rd-place finishes, and crossed the $4 million mark in career earnings at the U.S. Women's Open, where she T-31st. Made her third appearance on the European Solheim Cup Team with a 2-2-1 record.
In 2006, her best finish was T-4th at the Safeway International Presented by Coca-Cola. She also teamed with Janice Moodie to represent Scotland and finished runner-up at the Women's World Cup of Golf, an unofficial LPGA event.
In 2007, she recorded six top-10 finishes, including a season-best T-2nd at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Posted top-20 finishes in all four LPGA majors. Made her fourth appearance on the European Solheim Cup Team with a 3-1-0 record. Won her third event on the Ladies European Tour at the Scandinavian TPC Hosted by Annika.
In 2008, her best finish was T-2nd at the Sybase Classic. She also finished T-6th at the Safeway Classic and T-10th at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.
In 2009, she played a limited schedule because of her pregnancy with her second daughter. She won the Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, becoming the first Scot to win the major championship. She was qualified for her fifth European Solheim Cup Team, placed T-8th at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, T-9th at the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge, and finished 2nd on the Ladies European Tour season-ending season Order of Merit.
In 2010, recorded a season-best T-5th at the Sybase Match Play Championship and T-6th at the Kia Classic.
In 2011, earned her fourth-career LPGA victory at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational. Other top-10 finishes included: fourth at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, T-4th at the Mizuno Classic, T-5th at the RICOH Women's British Open, eighth at the HSBC Women's Champions, and T-8th at the Honda LPGA Thailand. She made her sixth appearance on the European Solheim Cup Team with a 2-0-2 record. Also won the Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open on the Ladies European Tour (LET).
2012 Notes: Played 20 events, making 18 cuts. She had seven top-10 finishes and a season-best runner-up finish at the LPGA HanaBank Championship, where she lost to Suzann Pettersen in a three-hole playoff. Earned $714,272, ranking 18th.
2013 Notes: Played in 21 events and made the cut in 18. Finished 21st on the Tour money list and recorded five top-10 finishes. Had a season-best runner-up performance at the Wegmans LPGA Championship, where she lost to Inbee Park in a three-hole playoff. Crossed the $8 million mark in career earnings at the Wal-Mart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G. Competed on her seventh European Solheim Cup Team.
2014 Notes: She was 32nd on the LPGA money list with $541,951 and 32nd in CME Points with 20 cuts made in 24 starts. She had four top-10 finishes and was 3rd at the LPGA Thailand, finishing four strokes back of winner Anna Nordqvist, and T-3rd at the Airbus LPGA Classic in Mobile, Ala., two back of winner Jessica Korda.
2015 Notes: Was named to the European Solheim Cup team for the 8th time as a captain's pick; went 3-1 in the matches, losing in singles to Morgan Pressel. She has a 15-10-8 total record in her 8 Solheim Cups. She played in 22 events and made 17 cuts finishing 63rd on the LPGA money list and 45th in CME points. Best finish was T-8th at the Kingsmill Championship.
2016 Notes: Matthew was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Scottish Golf Awards ceremony in March. Played in 23 LPGA events and made 21 cuts with 2 top-10s. Best finish T-5th in the Ricoh Women's British Open. She was 29th at the Rio Olympics as a Great Britain's golf team member. At age 41, she was the oldest women's golfer in the Olympics. Finished 44th on the money list with $414,683 and 58th in CME points. Played in 4 LET events, T-9th Handa Australian Women's Open, T-19th Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open, T-5th at the Ricoh Women's British Open, and T-36th at the Evian Championship.
2017 Notes: Played in 18 LPGA events making 10 cuts and the best finish of T-17th at the McKayson New Zealand Women's Open. She was supposed to be an assistant captain on the 2017 European Solheim Cup team but was called on to play when Suzann Pettersen was injured and could not compete. Matthew finished with a 3-1-0 record, including a 1-up win over Stacy Lewis in singles. She was named the captain of the 2019 European Solheim Cup team.
2018 Notes: Played in 17 LPGA Tour events making 8 cuts with one top-ten finish. Was 108th on the money list with $83,617 in earnings. Was T-10th at the Kingsmill Championship. Played in 6 LET events, best finish was 3rd at the Andalucia Open De Espana.
2019 Notes: Played in 11 LPGA Tour events, and her best finish was T-40th. In 7 LET events, her best finish was T-18th at the Fatima Bint Mubarak Open. Captained Team Europe to a 14.5-13.5 victory at the 2019 Solheim Cup in Gleneagles, Scotland, and will again serve as the European captain for the 2021 Solheim Cup at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Named an OBE in the New Year Honours List for services to golf.
2020 Notes: Just played in two events in Scotland, missed the cut at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open and T-59th at the AIG Women's Open.
2021 Notes: Played in seven events on the LET, best finish T-11th at the Aramco Team Series Sotogrande. Played in her first U.S. Senior Women's Open, finishing T-4th with a 2-under 286. She was ten back of winner Annika Sorenstam. Captained the European Solheim Cup team to a 15-13 victory over the U.S. at Inverness Club in Ohio. It was Europe's second Solheim Cup victory on U.S. soil and gave Matthew victory in both of her captaincies.
2022 Notes: Best finish in three LET starts a T-17th at the Aramco Team Series-Bangkok.
