Was teammate on the LSU golf team with Bob Friend, Emlyn Aubrey, Perry Moss, and Greg Lesher, all of whom played on the PGA Tour at one time. Made a 243-yard hole-in-one in the third round to grab the lead in the 2001 PGA Championship and then held off Phil Mickelson by making a 12-foot par putt on the 72nd hole. PGA Championship victory also gave him the 72-hole scoring record (265) in major championship history, which held until Henrik Stenson's 264 in the 2016 Open Championship. He posted a 64 in the final round of the 1998 Masters, one stroke off the course record, but his final-nine 29 tied the Masters' record for a low back-nine score (along with Mark Calcavecchia, who recorded his in 1992). He had had several health issues starting in December 2003 when he had surgery on his left wrist for bone spurs. In 2005 84 Lumber Classic was rushed off the course and stayed in Pittsburgh's UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital for overnight observation. Doctors diagnosed a heart condition called Supraventricular Tachycardia, a general term for a rapid heart rate originating above the ventricles, and a non-life-threatening ailment that was cured through surgery in mid-November.
In the summer of 2006 suffered a back injury and had to take six weeks off. In 2010, I had shoulder problems that got better later in the year. With all the problems, he thought of quitting but continued playing for his son, Carter, his biggest cheerleader. He couldn't play in Open Championship in 2011 because of a hip injury. Member of 2002, 2004, and 2006 Ryder Cup Teams and 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2011 Presidents Cup Teams.

2010 Notes: Finished 49th on the PGA Tour money list despite shoulder problems.
2011 Notes: Recorded his first win since the 2006 season and his best finish on the money list since the 2005 season. They finished 20th in the FedExCup standings and had seven top 10s and 13 top 25s in 16 made cuts. Lost the playoff to K.J. Choi at The Players, then came back the following week to win at Colonial. He played on his fourth Presidents Cup for the United States, posting a 3-1-0 record, including a singles victory over Robert Allenby.
2012 Notes: Highlights included a second at the McGladrey Classic and a T-4th at the U.S. Open, where he shared the 36-hole lead. Playing only 19 events, with five top-10s, he finished 47th on the money list. After the U.S. Open, he had a back ailment, which forced him to take seven weeks off, including the British Open. He returned to the WGC-Bridgestone and finished T-8th.
2013 Notes: Made the cut in 10 of 16 starts, with a best finish of T-7th at the PGA Championship. He failed to reach the FedExCup Playoffs (138th) for the first time in his career but finished 123rd on the money list to retain his card for the 2013-2014 season.
2014 Notes: He made 13 of 20 cuts, with two top-10s, T-4th at the Puerto Rico Open and T-5th at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. He missed the 54-hole cut at The Barclays to end his season at 118th in the FedExCup standings and money list.
2015 Notes: Finished T-9th at the Sanderson Farms Championship after holding a share of the second-round lead. He opened the Mississippi event by going bogey-free over his first 36 holes but shot a pair of 72s over the weekend. He also finished 5th at the Barracuda Championship, which was a tough choice to play in the event. Son, Carter, was competing the same week in the Junior PGA Championship, an event the elder Toms won in 1984. At 152nd in the FedExCup standings, he needed as many starts as possible to get within the top 125. His decision was worthwhile, and the top-five finish moved to No. 140 in the FedExCup standings at the time. He couldn't finish in the top 125, finishing 144th in the FedExCup rankings and 127th on the money list.
2016 Notes: In his last year before turning 50, he showed he still had it as he was runner-up in the Sanderson Farm Championship. It was his 594th start on the PGA Tour, and he had to play 26 holes on Sunday and 26 holes on Monday in the rain-delayed event. His next best finish was T-11th at the Barbasol Championship. He was 124th in the FedExCup race and 119th in the money race.
2017 Notes: He got his Champions Tour career off to a good start when he finished T-4th at the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. Also was T-6th at the Regions Tradition and 7th at the Senior PGA Championship. He finished his year strongly with a 3rd at PowerShares QQQ and T-4th at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. He ended the year 17th on the money list and 11th in Schwab rankings.
2018 Notes: Played in 22 PGA Champions events with 11 top-10 finishes. He won the U.S. Senior Open by a shot over Miguel Angel Jimenez, Tim Petrovic, and Jerry Kelly. He was 3rd at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, 4th at the Boca Raton Championship, and then T-2nd at the Chubb Classic. With partner Steve Flesch, he was 5th at the Toshiba Classic and T-5th at the Bass Pro Shops Legends. Has had a pair of T-10ths at the Insperity Invitational and Senior PGA Championship. Had a T-5th at the Ally Challenge and T-6th at the Invesco QQQ. Led the Charles Schwab Cup for two weeks and finished 7th in the final standings.
2019 Notes: Played in 21 PGA Tour Champions events with nine top-ten finishes. He was 10th in the final Schwab rankings. He started his year with a runner-up finish at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai; he made a bogey on the final hole to lose to Tom Lehman by a shot. He was T-2nd at the Regions Tradition, 6 shots back of winner Steve Stricker. He had a pair of 4th place finishes at the Oasis Championship and Principal Charity Classic, 4 shots back of the Sutherland/Parel playoff. On the PGA Tour was T-31st at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Was T-2nd at the U.S. Senior Open as defending champion, six shots back of winner Steve Stricker. He was T-5th at the Boeing Classic and was T-3rd at the Ally Challenge, four shots back of winner Jerry Kelly. He was T-3rd at the SAS Championship, five shots back of winner Jerry Kelly. His final event for the season was T-17th at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
2020 & 2021 Notes: Played in 32 PGA Tour Champions events with ten top-ten finishes. He was 14th in the final Schwab rankings. In his season debut, he carded rounds of 69-68-66 and finished T-9th at the 2020 Chubb Classic. He was T-6th at Sanford International, four shots back of winner Miguel Angel Jimenez. Was T-8th at the 2021 Cologuard Classic and T-9th at the 2021 Chubb Classic. At the Insperity Invitational was T-2nd, two shots back of winner Mike Weir. Was T-3rd at the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship, seven back of winner Steve Stricker. The following week was T-3rd again at Dick's Sporting Goods Open, two shots back of Cameron Beckman. Beat Dicky Pride on the first sudden-death playoff hole to win his second PGA Tour Champions victory at the 2021 Ascension Charity Classic. Shot a bogey-free 5-under 66 in his final round. At the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship, they shot 65-65 over the weekend to finish T-3rd, two shots back of winner Phil Mickelson.
2022 Notes: Played in 22 PGA TOUR Champions events with nine top-ten finishes. He was 15th in the Schwab Rankings and 14th on the money list, earning $999,629. He closed with 6-under 66 to finish 5th at the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, two shots back of the Miguel Angel Jimenez/Steven Alker playoff. He finished 7th at the Insperity Invitational. Solo leader after 36 holes and co-leader after 18 holes finished T-2nd at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic. Carded rounds of 65-71-70 to finish one shot behind champion Steve Flesch. Was T-9th at the Regions Tradition and Senior Players Championship. He was T-8th at the Boeing Classic and TimberTech Championship. In the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship was T-26th.
2023 Notes: He played in 21 PGA Tour Champions events, with ten top-ten finishes. He was 7th in the Schwab Rankings and 7th on the money list, earning $1,910,508. After opening with 70 at the Chubb Classic, he shot 68-67 on the weekend to finish T-6th, six shots back of winner Bernhard Langer. He won for a third time on PGA Tour Champions at the Cologuard Classic. Despite hitting his tee shot on No. 18 in the penalty area during the final round, he saved a bogey for a one-shot victory over Robert Karlsson. Went wire-to-wire to win the inaugural Galleri Classic by four shots over Steve Alker. He was T-3rd at the Insperity Invitational, seven shots back of winner Steven Alker. Finished runner-up at the Kaulig Companies Championship for his fourth top-3 of the season in his first 13 starts. Birdied five of his final nine holes on Sunday to shoot 65 after carding 69-70-68 in the first three rounds. Posted scores of 69-64-67 to finish T-7th at the Shaw Charity Classic. Finished T-8th at The Ally Challenge for his seventh top-10 of the season. He was T-5th at the Ascension Charity and T-7th at the Sanford International, his fifth consecutive top-ten finish. After opening with back-to-back 67s, he closed with 72 to finish T-6th at the TimberTech Championship for his 10th top-10 of the 2023 season. He was T-15th in the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
2024 Notes: Closed with bogey-free 65 to finish 4th at the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. It was his fifth top-5 in seven starts at the event. He finished T-5th while defending his championship at the Galleri Classic. Finished 2nd a shot back of the winner Paul Broadhurst at the weathered-shortened 36-hole Invited Celebrity Classic.
