Neal Shipley

He started playing golf at five.
In just three years at James Madison, he earned a degree in quantitative finance, with minors in math and economics, while playing on the golf team. With that accomplished and wanting to focus on golf, Shipley went into the transfer portal and chose Ohio State, where he's already earned a Master's in data analytics.
Alan Shipnuck of Fire Pit Collective described Shipley as a quick wit, big personality, glorious beer belly, and luscious mane of hair that touches his shoulders. He is the fun-loving, big-hitting underdog every golf gallery is dying to embrace. The native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is large-framed and full of energy, and he proudly wears a mullet. He is also something of a brainiac.
At home, Shipley has some fantastic courses to practice on. He caddied for several years at Oakmont Country Club, and between Monday privileges and having friends who play there, he figures he's played 50 rounds on one of the most vaunted layouts in the country. He said his home course is St. Clair Country Club south of Pittsburgh, where the greens regularly run faster than 14 on the Stimpmeter.
Shipley finished runner-up in the 2023 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club in suburban Denver. He lost to Nick Dunlap in the 36-hole final. It was his second U.S. Amateur start, he shot 74-77 to miss the cut at the 2021 U.S. Amateur.
The Amateur loss in Colorado was part of an amazing summer. He finished fourth in the Elite Amateur Series, thanks to runner-up finishes in the Sunnehanna Amateur, Trans-Mississippi Amateur, and Dogwood Invitational. He also was third in the Pacific Coast Amateur. In his final season at Ohio State after playing three seasons at James Madison University, Shipley won the Southwestern Invitational and finished fourth in The John Hayt Collegiate Invitational. The 2022 Pennsylvania Amateur champion was an honorable-mention All-American for the 2022-23 season.
At the start of 2024, he won the Southwestern Invitational.

Masters Factoid: Shipley remembers the first time he saw the Masters. He was in a restaurant with his parents, and the tournament was on TV. To this day, Shipley can recall the famous chip-in for birdie on the 16th hole as Woods went on to victory. When Shipley earned his trip to play in the Masters, he knew he had five practice rounds before tournament week and made his first trip to Augusta in January. Between then and his last visit on Easter Sunday he played more than 100 holes and has a good feel for the course. He told Golf.Com that the one thing about Augusta is its unique nature and how the course and its rolling topography remind him of the courses he plays in Western Pennsylvania. Shipley, who caddied at Oakmont, is familiar with both courses, which have slope and speed, so he will feel at home this week at Augusta National. Shipley?s childhood friend Carter Pitcairn, will be on his bag. But for his practice rounds, he?s had Augusta National loopers at his side. ?Those guys are so knowledgeable, I?ve been wearing out my pencil,? Shipley told writer Josh Sens.
