Paul Waring

Waring was born in Birkenhead and hails from a family with a strong sporting pedigree. His mother, Gill, swam for England, and his cousin, Matthew Smith, is a professional tennis player. He had a successful amateur career, which included winning the English Amateur in 2005. He turned professional in 2007 and almost enjoyed immediate success on the European Challenge Tour when he lost out in a playoff to Felipe Aguilar at the Postbank Challenge in Germany.
Won his card at the 2007 European Tour Qualifying School after an emotional fortnight following the death of his grandfather, Harry, who first introduced him to the game at the age of nine, taking him down to the local pitch and putt. Sadly, his grandfather passed away during the first round of Stage Two, and his funeral fell on the first round of the Final Stage. So, after getting his card for 2008, he dedicated the accomplishment to his grandfather, Harry Smith. Waring felt he was destined for great things, but back injuries have hampered his progress, forcing him to miss large parts of 2011, 2012 and 2015 seasons. Looked to be back on track when he finished T-3rd in the 2013 Portugal Masters and the 2015 Maybank Malaysian Open but that wouldn't be the case. He could only play in 8 European events in 2015 and 4 in 2016, with his best finish being T-22nd at the Portugal Masters. He was given a medical exemption for 2017 after a wrist injury and shoulder reconstruction.
In February 2017, he had his highest finish in 168 events on the European tour when he was runner-up in the Joburg Open. This event was one of the Open Qualifying Series events for the 2017 Open Championship, and he gained entry to the Open for the first time since 2008. In April, Waring finished 3rd in the Trophee Hassan II. Was the first-round leader at the French Open by two after shooting a first-round 64, but with rounds of 72-72-73, fell back into a T-16th. Played in 27 events, the most he has ever played in his career. He made 17 cuts and was in the top ten 3 times. Had his best finish in the Race to Dubai, finishing 60th, his earnings of euro726,227 his highest financial season to date.
2018 Notes: Played in 24 European Tour events, making 14 cuts with two top-ten finishes. Won his first European Tour title on his 200th start at the 2018 Nordea Masters, beating Thomas Aiken on the first hole of a playoff. Finished the year 83rd in the Race to Dubai.
2019 Notes: Played in 22 European Tour events, making 20 cuts with six top-ten finishes. Was 22nd in the Race to Dubai. Was T-6th in his season opener at the Abu Dhabi Championship. T-3rd at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, he had another T-6th finish at the Betfred British Masters. Paired with Tom Lewis, they finished 2nd at the GolfSixes Cascais. Shot a final-round 66 to finish T-7th at the Dubai Duty-Free Irish Open to get a spot at Royal Portrush, where he finished T-63rd. Was T-3rd at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, two shots back of winner Victor Perez. Was T-8th at the WGC-HSBC Champions. He finished his T-14th year at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
2020 Notes: Played in 15 European Tour events, making 8 cuts. Was 133rd in the Race to Dubai with earnings of euro172,123. Best finish: T-12th at the Abu Dhabi Desert Classic.

2023 Notes: Played in 23 DP World Tour events, making 12 cuts with three top ten finishes. Was 51st in the Race to Dubai with earnings of euro334,302. Best finish: T-5th at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed.

Won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, shot 66 in the final round to beat Tyrrell Hatton by a shot. With the victory, Waring got into the top ten in the Race to Dubai, and when he finished T-16th, he found himself not only eligible for the DP World Tour in 2025 but also the PGA Tour.
