Johnston was named after Mel Gibson's character in Lethal Weapon
His childhood goal was to play golf at Arizona State University, and he did for five years, from 2020 to 2024. He helped the Arizona State Sun Devils men's golf team to the 2024 Pac-12 title. He earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2021 and 2024, and second-team honors in 2022. He earned the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2023.
After graduating in 2024, Johnston played on the PGA Tour Americas, having earned his way to the tour via PGA Tour University. Played in 10 events, making 7 cuts with one top ten finish. Best finish was T-5th at the CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open. Finished 54th on the money list with earnings of $22,132.
2025 Notes: In November 2024, Johnston earned his 2025 DP World Tour card at Q School. In his second start on the DP World Tour (his 12th professional start), ranked world number 954, he won the ISPS Handa Australian Open at Kingston Heath Golf Club and Victoria Golf Club, an event co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia. He shot a final-round 68 to beat Curtis Luck by three shots, and he climbed to 316 in the Official World Golf Rankings. The win got him into the 153rd Open Championship via the OQS Australia.
