Oldcorn was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England. He was raised in Edinburgh and represents Scotland. He won the English Amateur in 1982 and turned professional after playing for Great Britain & Ireland in the 1983 Walker Cup, winning all four of his games.
Oldcorn was the medalist at the European Tour Final Qualifying School in 1983. He had a steady start to his career on tour before being struck down with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) in the early 1990s. Has chronic fatigue syndrome. He returned to form in 1993, to claim his first tour victory in the Turespana Masters Open de Andalucia. Away from the tour he also won the Sunderland of Scotland Masters. Several solid years followed along with another title, the 1995 DHL Jersey Open. The highlight of his career came in 2001 when he became the oldest winner in the history of the BMW PGA Championship (although Miguel Angel Jimenez would later beat that record). He finished the season with a career-best 26th place on the European Tour Order of Merit. Played in 457 European Tour events, was in the money 244 times with 29 top-10 finishes. Has European Tour earnings of euros2,878,014.
One of the most consistent performers on the Senior Tour, the Scot finished seventh on the Order of Merit in 2013, the third time he has featured at the end of season top ten in four campaigns. Missed out on a second Senior Tour title when he was caught by Peter Fowler in the final round of the French Riviera Masters - one of seven top ten finishes in the 2013 season. Fired a superb closing round of 61 - including a front nine of 29 - in the Winston golf Senior Open, but ultimately came up one shot short as Gordon Brand Jnr took the title. Was also runner-up twice in 2012 and was in contention for the John Jacobs Trophy in 2011 before an eye injury blighted the second half of his season. Still managed to finish third on the Order of Merit following a superb start to the year in which he amassed seven top ten finishes in nine appearances including a maiden Senior Tour title, completing a PGA double when he captured The De Vere Club PGA Seniors Championship in emphatic style, finishing nine strokes clear of Gordon Brand Jnr at Slaley Hall. That came ten years after the biggest win of his career, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club where he produced the performance of his life to edge out Angel Cabrera and Sir Nick Faldo, one of three victories on The European Tour. Had a consistent start to life on the Senior circuit in 2010, recording eight top ten finishes and narrowly missing out on a maiden title when he was runner-up to George Ryall in the inaugural Van Lanschot Senior Open. Finished seventh on the 2010 Order of Merit. .
