Turned 50 on July 17, 2004, and just five days later made an impressive European Senior Tour debut at the Senior British Open, where he tied for 2nd. Sealed his first Seniors Tour win at Wentworth Club in August 2005 when he dominated in an eight-shot victory at the Travis Perkins Senior Masters. Became the third-oldest winner on the European Tour behind Des Smyth and Neil Coles when, just three days before his 48th birthday, when he won The 2002 Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond, his eighth European Tour title. Known as El Gato - "The Cat." because of the way he stealthily stalks and overcomes opponents.
The son of a club professional in Cordoba, where he still lives, he earned his PGA Tour card in 1994 but returned after only one season to rejoin his many friends in Europe. Close friend of fellow Argentine Angel Cabrera, with whom he finished second in the WGC World Cup in their native country in December 2000. Used his own money to help sponsor Cabrera on the European Tour and was rewarded when his protégé won the 2001 Open de Argentina and followed that with victory in the 2002 Benson and Hedges International Open. Attributed his success to improved concentration, thanks to the study of an Indian yoga technique, Rhami Hayat.
Has been very successful on the PGA Tour Champions, with five victories, including two major wins in the 2006 Jeld-Wen Tradition and in the 2008 U.S. Senior Open, where he defeated Fred Funk by four strokes.
In 2011, played in just 15 events as a result of limited-exempt status and finished 40th on the money list. Was third in the Insperity Championship.
In 2012, played 15 events, best finish T-8th at the Pacific Links Hawaii and T10th at 3M Championship. Finished the year 66th on the money list with $171,910 in earnings. Only played seven events between 2013 and present, with his best finish a T-17th in the 2014 Big Cedar Lodge Legends.
Since then has played some on the European Senior Tour best finish T-13th Russian Open.
2015 Notes: Played twice, finished T-30th (with Fred Funk) at the Bass Pro Shops Legends and missed the cut at the U.S. Senior Open.
