Started playing golf at the age of nine. Credits her parents and Tiger Woods as the individuals who most influenced her career. Enjoyed a successful amateur career. Was a member of the Korean National Team in 2003 and 2004. Won three tournaments on the International Junior Golf Tour and also competed on the American Junior Golf Association circuit, where she won the 2005 Hargray Junior Classic. She first came to the U.S. at age 16 to attend a golf school in South Carolina. She moved to Maryland, then Florida, before making San Diego her home.
Won the 2005 U.S. Girls' Junior at Banbury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho, where she defeated Inbee Park in the final, 5 and 4. Medalist in the stroke-play portion of the 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.
In 2006, as an amateur, earned co-medalist honors at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament to earn exempt status for the 2007 LPGA season and turned professional immediately following the final round.
In 2007, recorded four top-10 finishes, including a season-best 2nd at the Wegmans LPGA after losing a two-hole, sudden-death playoff to Lorena Ochoa. Recorded her first LPGA career hole-in-one in the third round of the MasterCard Classic. Carded a season-low 65 in the third round of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic, where she posted seven consecutive under-par holes en route to a Tour season-low (par-34) 7-under-par 27 nine-hole score.
In 2008, became a Rolex first-time Winner at the Longs Drugs Challenge, where she crossed the $1 million mark in career earnings. Recorded six additional top-10 finishes, including a T-3rd at the U.S. Women's Open.
In 2009, won the LPGA State Farm Classic, the second LPGA victory of her career, and finished runner-up at the Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill. Finished 3rd at both the J Golf Phoenix LPGA International and the U.S. Women's Open. T-5th at the Sybase Classic and crossed the $2 million mark in career earnings at the Wegmans LPGA, where she finished T-10th. Won the Dubai Ladies Masters, the season-ending event on the Ladies European Tour (LET).
In 2010, recorded her third career LPGA victory at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational by Banamex and Corona Light. T-3rd at the Ricoh Women's British Open and the LPGA Tour Championship. Finished 4th at the Tres Marias Championship and U.S. Women's Open. T-5th at the LPGA Championship Presented by Wegmans and P&G NW Arkansas Championship. On the Ladies European Tour had three top-10 finishes, the best being a T-2nd at the AIB Ladies Irish Open, and was 4th on that tour's season-ending money list.
2011 Notes: Recorded 10 top-10 finishes, including T-2nd at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, T-3rd at the Honda LPGA Thailand, Kia Classic, and the Evian Masters, T-5th at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, 7th at the HSBC Women's Championship, T-9th at the Mizuno Classic, T-10th at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the CMA Group Titleholders.
2012 Notes: Played in 21 events, with 17 cuts made, $561,302 (26). She had five top-10 finishes, including 2nd at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Battled a left-wrist injury that forced her to withdraw from the LOTTE Championship and miss time in May. Crossed the $5 million mark in career earnings in October.
2013 Notes: Played in 23 events making 23 cuts. Had eight top-10 finishes, including runner-up finishes at the Kia Classic and U.S. Women's Open. Earned $1,125,389, which placed 7th on the money list.
2014 Notes: She was 48th on the LPGA money list with $349,765 and 30th in CME points with 15 cuts made in 18 starts. She won the Ladies European Tour's Handa Ladies European Masters by five shots for her first worldwide victory since the 2010 Lorena Ochoa Invitational. She lost a playoff to Austin Ernst at the Portland Classic after they tied at 14-under 274. Kim missed an 8-foot par putt on the first extra hole.
2015 Notes: Played in 20 events, making 16 cuts she was 54th on the money list and 42nd in CME Points. Best finish was 3rd at the LOTTE Championship, one stroke off the lead entering Sunday, and shooting 74 to finish two strokes out of the Sei Young Kim-Inbee Park playoff.
2016 Notes: Played in 17 LPGA events, made 15 cuts, and was in the top ten 4 times. She won the Reignwood LPGA Classic, shooting 24-under 268 for a one-shot victory over Mi Jung Hur and Mirim Lee. It was Kim's first LPGA victory in six years, since the 2010 Lorena Ochoa Invitational. She made three starts on the LET Tour and won the Handa Ladies European Masters for the second time in three years. Kim shot a final-round 63 at GC Hubbelrath in Germany to beat 54-hole co-leader Belen Mozo by five shots. At the end of the year fell downstairs and spent the winter rehabbing her back.
2017 Notes: Played in 17 events making 12 cuts. Some doubts about her back, but in her sixth start back, she won the ShopRite Classic beating Anna Nordqvist by 2 shots. Six weeks later won at the Marathon Classic, shooting 63 in the final round to beat Lexi Thompson by 4 shots. She got her third win of 2017 and her first career major victory at the Ricoh Women's British Open at Kingsbarns. She shot 66 in round three to take a six-stroke lead into the final round and held with a 71 Sunday for a 2-shot win over Jodi Ewart Shadoff. For the year was 12th on the money list with $1,227,674 in earnings.
2018 Notes: Played in 16 LPGA events making 14 cuts with five top-ten finishes. After missing the cut in the Bahamas, the airline lost her golf clubs on the flight home to California. She posted descriptions of the clubs on social media; some fans found the bag and some of the clubs in a San Diego golf shop. The clubs were returned to her, and she finished T-4th at the KIA Classic. Also was 2nd in the LPGA Volvik Championship, a shot back of winner Minjee Lee. Was T-8th at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship and 7th t the ASI Ladies Scottish Open. Had season earnings of $460,644, which was 50th on the money list and 60th in the Race to CME. She was a member of the South Korean in the UL International Crown and finished 3-1-0 as Korea won the tournament.
2019 Notes: Played in 15 LPGA events making 12 cuts with three top-10 finishes. Was 53rd on the money list. At the ANA Inspiration shot a second-round 65 to take the second-round lead, and shot 73-74 over the weekend to finish T-4th, five shots back of winner Jin Young Ko.
2020 Notes: Played in three LPGA events making the cut in two. Best finish T-58th at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open.
2021 Notes: Played in nine LPGA events making six cuts. Best finish T-26th at the U.S. Women's Open. Was 122nd on the money list with $69,620.
2022 Notes: Best finish was T-21st at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.
