He started to play golf at age 12 when his family moved to Honduras, where his father was the principal at the American School. Three years later, the family moved back to Connecticut, where he continued playing golf and caddying whenever possible. After high school, Green moved to Florida and attended Palm Beach Community College, where his game finally blossomed. He turned professional in 1979 but failed to earn his card on his first two tries. He finally succeeded in Fall of 1981 but lost his card when he won only $11,899 in 1982 and returned to the Q-school. He regained his playing privileges and broke into the top 125 in 1983 by winning $40,263, but Green slumped in 1984 to only $20,160 and again had to re-qualify at the Q-School. He won his card back, and 1985 proved to be a pivotal year for him, as he won the Buick Open by four strokes. He showed it wasn't a fluke, as he returned in 1986 and won the inaugural International tournament. Even though he didn't win in 1987, he finished 36th on the money list.
