Member 1969, '71, '73, '75, '79 and '81 Ryder Cup teams. Captain of the 1985 team... Since he turned 50, he has been a terror on the Senior Tour.
In 1990, he won seven events: Royal Caribbean, Aetna Challenge, Vintage Chrysler, Sanders Kingwood, Commemorative, U.S. Senior Open, and Transamerica Senior Golf Championship... In 28 tournaments entered, he had eight seconds, one third and finished in the top 10, 26 times; stroke average 68.89 (ranked 1st); money $1,190,518 (ranked 1st).

Didn't make a start until the last week of March due to surgery to repair ligament damage on his left thumb. Also won the unofficial Fuji Electric Grandslam.

Played hurt for the majority of the summer with a bulging disc near his neck and was forced to withdraw from all events after the Transmerica. Had successful surgery to repair the damage in December and was back on Tour in February.
