Operates a golf design company with his brothers. Member of the 1989 Ryder Cup Team. One of only 15 players to win tournaments in the '70s, 80's and 90's. Enjoyed his best season in 1994 when in the last nine events won three of them.
McCumber was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, where he attended Robert E. Lee High School. He turned professional in 1974 and joined the PGA Tour in 1978. McCumber won ten times on the PGA Tour between 1979 and 1994 including the Players Championship (1988) and Tour Championship (1994). He also won the World Cup for the United States in partnership with Ben Crenshaw in 1988. He played on the 1989 Ryder Cup team. Played in 478 events, with his ten wins, eight runner-ups and 62 top-tens. Made 321 cuts and earned $5.3 million
After turning 50 in 2001, McCumber played on the Champions Tour from 2001 to 2008, but did not win an event. Played in 92 events, his best finish was T4th in the 2003 Verizon Classic. He had seven top-tens and earned $1.2 million. Since 2008 has played just once missing the cut in the 2012 Senior Open Championship. Also teamed with Wayne Grady finished T2nd in the Raphael Division of the Legends of Golf.
In 2013 teamed up with Wayne Grady to finish T7th in the Raphael Division of the Legends of Golf.
