Raised in Wyckoff, New Jersey, Hoffmann was a hockey defenseman for seven years before turning his full attention to golf. He attended Ramapo High School. 2012 Notes: Earned his rookie ticket to the PGA Tour by finishing 19th on the Web.com Tour money list. 2013 Notes: Following six missed cuts in his first nine starts, finished the PGA Tour season on a strong note, making six consecutive cuts. Got his year going with a T-5th at the HP Byron Nelson, then had top 20s at the Travelers Championship (T-9th) and AT&T National (T-8th). This paved the way for entry into the FedExCup Playoffs. He began the week of The Barclays ranked 111th in FedExCup standings, but a missed cut at Liberty National ended his year at 117th in the FedExCup rankings and 96th on the money list.
2014 Notes: Had a breakout year, but barely made the FedExCup Playoffs after missing the cut at the Wyndham. He was 124th in the standings and after a T-9th at The Barclays, climbed to 72nd. Finished T-35th at the Deutsche Bank, which got him to 68th. At the BMW Championship, he finished 3rd, his best result for the year, when gave him 21st place and a ticket to the Tour Championship. Became the first player to advance from outside the Playoffs bubble three consecutive weeks (The Barclays, Deutsche Bank Championship and BMW Championship) to earn a spot in the Tour Championship. Was T-27th at East Lake and finished the year 26th in the FedExCup rankings and 64th on the money list.

Best was T-17th at WGC-Cadillac Championship. Got rolling with a 4th-place finish at the Arnold Palmer, where he opened the tournament with a bogey-free 66. Following the round, he learned that his 97-year-old maternal grandmother had passed away. Hoffman claimed his memories of her motivated his solid play. He finished T-9th at the RBC Heritage.
