Payne Stewart

Stewart's father Bill, who was an accomplished player, winning the Missouri State Amateur and Missouri Senior, and playing in the 1955 U.S. Open, introduced Payne to the game at age 4. His game improved through the junior ranks, and he went to Southern Methodist University on a golf scholarship. He won several collegiate events, including the 1979 Co-Championship of the Southwest Conference. After turning pro he failed at the Qualifying School in 1979 and played on the Asian tour in 1980 and '81, winning the 1981 Indian and Indonesian Opens. He returned to the U.S. at the end of 1981 and earned his tour card. When he won the 1987 Hertz Bay Hill Classic, Stewart donated the entire check of $108,000 to the Florida Hospital Golden Circle of Friends, in memory of his father who had died of cancer two years before. He won his first major championship at the 1989 PGA Championship and picked up his second in 1991 at the U.S. Open, defeating Scott Simpson in a Monday playoff.
