Player Notes: In his youth, Floyd wavered between a career in baseball and golf, but a victory at the 1960 National Jaycees tournament tipped the scales toward golf. Floyd was Rookie of the Year on Tour in 1963, recording a win at the St. Petersburg Open. At the time was 20 years, 6 months and 13 days, which was the eight youngest player to win on the PGA Tour. He won 22 times in more than three decades on the PGA Tour, including four major championships (1969 and '82 PGA Championship, 1976 Masters and 1986 U.S. Open), the 1982 Memorial Tournament, and the 1981 Tournament Players Championship, where he defeated Curtis Strange in a playoff. Floyd's last victory on the PGA Tour was the 1992 Doral Ryder Open, winning at age 49, two weeks after losing his home in a fire. One of the greatest disappointments of his career was the 1990 Masters, which he lost in a playoff to Nick Faldo after hitting his approach into the water at the 11th hole (the second extra hole).
Winner, 1983 Vardon Trophy. Competed on eight U.S. Ryder Cup teams (1969, '75, '77, '81, '83, '85, '91 and '93). Floyd also was the captain of the 1989 U.S. Ryder Cup team. Was the assistant captain to Paul Azinger for the victorious United States team in the 2008 Ryder Cup. Had successful surgery for prostate cancer in December 2002.
The 2009 AT&T Championship on the PGA Tour Champions Tour was Floyd's last official start. On the eve of the 2010 Masters, April 6, 2010, Floyd announced his retirement from competitive golf. In September 2012, his wife of 38 years, Maria, lost her battle with cancer. She was instrumental in giving Floyd the motivation to change his habits and rejuvenate his game. Floyd was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1989.
