Rhein Gibson

Many thought that when Rhein Gibson finished T-4th in the 2013 Australian Open and won a spot to play in the 2014 Open Championship, it was probably the biggest event of this journeyman's life. In a way it was because up until that point he never did so well in a big event, yes he has won events on the Hooters Tour and other mini-tour events in which he participates when not playing in Australia and the One Asian Tour.
But Gibson could be more recognized as shooting, according to the Guinness World Records, the lowest score on a regulation 18 hole golf course. It was a 55 on a legit course, no not a par 3 but a course that measured 6,698 yards. It happened in 2012 at the River Oaks Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma. Rhein spent his college years playing the River Oaks course as he played for Oklahoma Christian University, and played this amazing round with two local buddies.
Rhein started his round on the back 9 of the par 71 course with a routine par, then went eagle-birdie-eagle in a ho-hum 5-under 3 hole stretch, before closing with 5 consecutive birdies to turn in a stupid low 10-under 26. After reportedly being forced to wait 15 minutes at the turn, he ?only? parred the first two holes, but then birdied 6 of his last 7 holes to post his ridiculous 55. His quote after the round was, ?I just kind of got hot I guess and every putt I hit went in, that?s the best I can explain it to be honest.? Yep, ?kind of got hot? could?ve been more accurately replaced with ?got nuclear warhead hot? in that last sentence.
Rhein?s round eclipsed the previous world record of Homero Blancas, a PGA Tour player from the 1960s who also shot a 55 but on a par-70 course of just 5,000 yards, which was originally in the Guinness Book of World Records but was taken out after harder qualifying rules were set.
In 2014 Gibson has played in seven events on the One Asian, Korean, Japan and Australian Tours:
Oates Victorian Open T35th
New Zealand Open T-57th
Indonesia PGA Championship T-2nd
Has missed the cut in his last four events, Volvo China Open, The Crowns, Caltax Maekyung Open and SK Telecom Open.
