Robert MacIntyre

He comes from the town of Oban, a picturesque ferry port with a population of about 8,500 on the western edge of the Scottish Highlands. Known as "Bob from Oban," MacIntyre is Scotland's greatest all-time left-handed golfer. He started to focus on golf at the age of 17 after growing up playing his favorite sport, shinty (field hockey). Between 13 and 17, he played for his local shinty club, Oban Camanachd, in his native Scotland. His father, Dougie, is the greenskeeper at Glencruitten Golf Club, and the family home sits a mere 20 paces from the 12th tee. MacIntyre had a successful amateur career. In 2013, he won the Scottish Youths Championship and the Scottish Boys Open Stroke-Play Championship. He won the Scottish Amateur in 2015, and in 2016, he lost 2&1 to Scott Gregory in the final of the Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. MacIntyre represented Scotland in the 2016 Eisenhower Trophy and played in the 2017 Walker Cup. He attended McNeese State University from 2014 to 2015.
MacIntyre turned professional in late 2017. In October, he played his first two events as a professional on the MENA Golf Tour, finishing T-3rd in Jordan's Ayla Golf Championship and winning the Sahara Kuwait Championship.
In November 2017, MacIntyre made the final stage of the European Tour Q-school. He finished T-37th to secure a 2018 Challenge Tour card.
2018 Notes: Played in 17 Challenge Tour events, making 15 cuts with two top-10 finishes. Was runner-up at the Vierumaki Finnish Challenge, losing a playoff to Kim Koivu. They also lost another playoff to Victor Perez at the Foshan Open. Earned euro114,368 and was 12th on the Order of Merit.
2019 Notes: Played in 30 European Tour events, making 25 cuts with seven top-ten finishes. It was 11th in the Race to Dubai. Back-to-back runner-up finishes, was T-2nd at the Betfred British Masters, a shot back of winner Marcus Kinhult. MacIntyre's next start was 2nd at the Made in Denmark, a shot back of winner Bernd Wiesberger. Making his first start in a major championship in the British Open at Royal Portrush, he shot 68-72-71-68 to finish T-6th. MacIntyre became the first Scot since Andrew Kirkcaldy in 1879 to have a top-10 finish in his British Open debut. He was runner-up again at the Porsche European Open, a shot back of winner Paul Casey. He was in the mix at the Italian Open until he shot 71 in the final round to finish T-4th, five shots back of winner Bernd Wiesberger. He was T-7th at the Turkish Airlines Open, T-8th at the Nedbank Open, and T-14th at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. He won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award.
2020 Notes: Played in 17 European Tour events, making 13 cuts with four top-ten finishes. It was 23rd in the Race to Dubai. He started his season with a T-8th at the Dubai Desert Classic. He had a bad spell, but after getting back from finishing T-56th in the U.S. Open, he was T-14th at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, T-58th at the BMW PGA Championship, and then broke out with a T-3rd at the Aphrodite Hill Cyprus Open, finishing two shots back of the Callum Shinkwin/Kalle Samooja playoff. The following week at the same venue in the Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Showdown, the format called for the top 16 and ties after 54 holes (which was 19 players) playing a shootout, and MacIntyre shot the low round of 64 to win by a shot over Masahiro Kawamura and his first European Tour title. In his next start at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa, he finished T-6th, five shots back of winner Christiaan Bezuidenhout. He ended the season with a T-23rd finish in Dubai's DP World Tour Championship.
2021 Notes: Played in 19 European Tour events, making 17 cuts with five top-ten finishes. It was 9th in the Race to Dubai, earning euro1,532,416. He played in 13 PGA Tour events making 11 cuts with two top-ten finishes. He was 3rd at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, five shots back of winner Paul Casey. MacIntyre finished T-9th at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play; he lost to Victor Perez 5 & 4 in the Round of 16. The good news, his play in early 2021 moved MacIntyre up to 44th in the Official World Golf Ranking to earn a spot in the Masters (he had ended 2020 55th in the ranking). He was T-12th at the Masters, earning him a trip to the 2022 Masters. He finished T-8th at the Betfred British Masters, three shots back of the Bland/Migliozzi playoff. He was T-8th at the British Open. He tried to earn his PGA Tour card by going to the Korn Ferry Tour Finals but missed the cut at the Albertsons Boise Open and Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship. He finished the season with a T-4th finish at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, four shots back of winner Collin Morikawa.
2022 Notes: Played in 24 DP World Tour events, making 18 cuts with four top-ten finishes. He was 18th in the Race to Dubai. He played in 8 PGA Tour events making six cuts with two top-25 finishes. Their best finish was T-15th at the Genesis Invitational. I was T-9th at The Ras Al Khaimah Classic. Won the Italian Open, beating Matt Fitzpatrick in a playoff. He was T-8th at the Cazoo Open De France and T-9th at the Andalucia Masters. Ended his season with a T-34th finish at the DP World Tour Championship.
2023 Notes: Played in 27 DP World Tour events, making 21 cuts with seven top-ten finishes. He was 13th in the Race to Dubai. T-7th at the Magical Kenya Open, T-6th at the ISPS Handa Championship, and T-7th at the Korea Championship. MacIntyre withdrew from the Italian Open and revealed that he has been dealing with back strains for almost a year. He has undergone extensive treatment for the problem and feels it's getting better on what he calls a "niggling injury." Did finish T-4th at the Made in Himmerland, two shots back of the Rasmus Hojgaard/Nacho Elvira playoff. Unfortunately, he played his last six holes in four over par. Shot a final round 64 in poor conditions in the Genesis Scottish Open but finished 2nd when Rory McIlroy made birdies at 17 and 18 to claim the victory over MacIntyre. He was T-4th at the D+D Real Czech Masters, five shots back of the winner Todd Clements. He compiled a 2-0-1 record for Team Europe in his Ryder Cup debut as Europe beat the United States. Defeated Wyndham Clark, 2 & 1, in Singles. Was T-6th at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and finished up the season T-18th at the DP World Tour Championship.
2024 Notes: Decided to play on the PGA Tour; he was T-6th at the Mexico Open at Vidanta and T-8th at the PGA Championship. Won the RBC Canadian Open by one shot over Ben Griffin, earning his first career PGA Tour title in his 45th start at the age of 27 years, 9 months, 30 days. He became the 17th player to make the RBC Canadian Open, his first win on Tour and first since Nathan Green in 2009. He became the fifth player from Scotland to win on Tour since the start of the 1940 season and the first since Martin Laird won the 2020 Shriners Children's Open. Three weeks later, he claimed another national championship by winning the Genesis Scottish Open. He played his last five holes: birdie-par-eagle-par-birdie to beat Adam Scott by a shot.
