Robert-Jan Derksen

Took up golf at 14 because a new course was constructed close to his home in Nijmegen. His father became a member, and son went too! Biggest influence has been Irish-born Dutch National coach, Tom O'Mahoney. Won Dutch Match Play in 1993 and Stroke Play title in 1996 before turning professional. Gained a card at the second attempt at the Qualifying School in 1997, when he was third, and again in 1998, when placed fourth, but lost it the following year. Gained his card for 2002 by finishing eighth on the Challenge Tour Rankings but despite 29 outings on Tour, finished 149th on the Volvo Order of Merit. Returned to the Tour School in Emporda and Pals and repeated his 1998 and 1999 successes in San Roque when he took the 25th card. In his spare time, enjoys surfing the net and has his own website. Also likes abstract painting. Produced his own masterpiece when he held off the challenge of Ernie Els to win the 2003 Dubai Desert Classic, his maiden European Tour title.
