Seve Ballesteros

The youngest son of a farmer, Ballesteros grew up in the tiny Spanish town of Pedrena. He took up the game at the age of seven when his brother Manuel made him a club from the head of an old three-iron. Even though he was forbidden to play at the Real Club de golf de Pedrena, the course next to his home, he taught himself to play the game with that single club on the beach along the Bay of Santander. To this day Ballesteros credits his fabled shotmaking abilities to those times on the beach. He caddied as he grew older, sneaking onto the empty golf course at dawn. His three older brothers, Baldomero, Manuel and Vicente all went on to become golf professionals.
Ballesteros caught the attention of the golf world when, at age 19, he led at the start of the final round of the 1976 British Open, two strokes ahead of Johnny Miller. He failed to win on that occasion, but his daring play charmed the galleries. He is credited with the great rise in popularity of golf in Europe over the last two decades, topping the European Order of Merit six times and winning five majors. His victory at the 1980 Masters, which until Tiger Woods' win in 1997 made him the youngest Masters winner, was an inspiration to his fellow European golfers, who realized that they could compete and win in America.
Back troubles have plagued Ballesteros and his game in recent years, and he announced his retirement from competition last summer. On October 10th, 2008 was admitted into a Mardrid hospital and diagnosed with a brain tumour, for which he spent the last part of 2008 in hospital undergoing surgery. Was released from the hospital on December 9th, returning to his home in northern Spain and is undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
