Tony Johnstone

Was a charismatic figure on The European Tour for more than 20 years, winning six times including the PGA Championship in 1992, but more recently he has swapped his clubs for a place in the television commentary box at golf tournaments around the globe. Contemplated a similar career change back in 1999 after the TNT Dutch Open when he announced: â??I thought about becoming a window cleaner on very tall buildings!â? Turned to coach Simon Holmes and eye specialist, Dr Ken West, to help with his putting â?? the one element in his game which was holding him back. Things came together in the 2001 Qatar Masters, when he had a career-best 101 putts (a month after telling his wife he was quitting) to take the title from Robert Karlsson. Grew up in Zimbabwe with Nick Price, Mark McNulty and Denis Watson. Noted short-game genius and topped Reuters Performance Data Sand Saves category in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
Made an emotional return to tournament golf in 2006 when he joined the Seniors Tour after making a remarkable recovery from multiple sclerosis. The 1992 PGA Championship winner and Sky TV analyst thought he would never play golf again when the illness was diagnosed in 2004, but after undergoing a revolutionary drug treatment he was well enough to join the seniors on his 50th birthday. Made his mark with a share of fifth place on his second start and went on to register five further top tens to finish his rookie year in 13th place on the Order of Merit.
Recorded four top tens in 2007, the best of which was a third place finish at the Open de France Senior de Divonne. He also struck a hole in one in Switzerland during the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.
Clinched a fairytale first Senior Tour win at the 2008 Jersey Seniors Classic, just four years after being told he would never play golf again because of Multiple Sclerosis. Record three other top ten finishes and tied for 11th in The Senior Open Championship en route to finishing 12th in the Order of Merit.
