William McGirt

McGirt got his start in the game because his "aunt had me on the golf course as soon as I could walk." Lists making two aces in one round as his biggest thrill in golf. Was the 2001 Southern Conference champion, a 2000 All-Southern Conference selection, as well as the 2000 Augusta State Invitational champion and Southern Conference Championship runner-up. In 1997, was the Davidson College Invitational champion. Earned all-state high school honors in 1997 and all-conference honors in baseball.
Turned pro in 2004. Won the Cabarrus Classic Championship on the eGolf Tour, where he began competing in 2005. Also played on the Hooters Tour (2007) and the Gateway Tour (2004). Played at his first PGA Tour event in 2007, missing the cut at the Wyndham Championship. In 2008, made the cut in 17 of 19 starts on the eGolf Tour, with eight top-10 finishes, including the first five tournaments of the season.
In 2009, made the cut in 16 of 18 starts on the eGolf Tour, with three top-10 finishes. Played his first Web.com event, missing the cut at the BMW Charity Pro-Am and later in the year made it through PGA Tour Q-School, finishing T-90th which secured his status on the Web.com tour for the next year.
2010 Web.com Summary: Tournaments Entered - 24; In Money - 17; Top-10 Finishes - 4; Scoring Average - 69.71 (Rank 14th); money - $173,444 (Rank 34th); Best Finish ââ?¬â?? T-3rd, Pacific Rubiales Bogota. At the end of the year, finished T-2nd at PGA Tour Q-School, getting his Tour card for 2011.
In 2011, two top-25 finishes and then a T-52nd at the Wyndham Championship helped him claim the 125th spot in the FedexCup Playoffs. Finished T-24th, which secured a spot at the Deutsche Bank but his quest ended there with a T-42nd. He finished 83rd in the final FedExCup point list. Was not able to gain enough momentum in the fall series and ended the year 141st on the money list. That forced him back to Q-School but he retained his PGA Tour card for 2012 with a T-13th finish.
2012 Notes: Began the year ranked 444th in the Official World Golf Ranking, thanks to his first top-10 of his career, T-5th at the True South Classic, then a runner-up finish at the RBC Canadian Open moved him to 200th in the world. Had his third top-10 of the year at The Barclays, finishing T-10th. Was 50th in the FedExCup standings and 74th on the money list.
2013 Notes: Made 14 of 24 cuts, with two top-10s. Finished No. 100 in the FedExCup standings and 97th on the money list. In July, returned to Canada, where he earned a T-2nd at the 2012 RBC Canadian Open (Hamilton G&CC). Shot 71-69-67-68 at Glen Abbey GC to repeat the T-2nd finish, this time with Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, and Jason Bohn.
2014 Notes: Four top-10 finishes in 19 made cuts, including two in his last four starts of the season. For the fourth consecutive season, played his way into the FedExCup Playoffs, competing in the first three events. Finished his season ranked 61st in the FedExCup standings and 84th on the money list. Best finish of the year came at The Barclays, where he birdied three of his last four holes Sunday en route to a five-under 66 at Ridgewood CC, and a T-5th finish with Ernie Els and Matt Kuchar.
2015 Notes: Enjoyed another solid season, collecting seven top-25 finishes in 30 starts and playing in three FedExCup Playoff events. Best finish was 7th at the Sanderson Farms Championship. He ended the year 69th in the FedEx Cup rankings and 102nd on the money list.
2016 Notes: After missing the cut at the Frys.Com Open, finished T-8th at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Came in T-2nd at the weather-delayed Sanderson Farms Championship. Due to delays, it took him three days to shoot a second-round, six-under 66, and two days to post a third-round 66. It took just Monday afternoon, though, for him to post a final-round, four-under-par 68, and claim a share of 2nd place with David Toms, just a shot behind Peter Manati. A couple of days later, his wife delivered the couple's second child. Had his third top-10, a T-8th result at the Honda Classic, then a T-9th at the RBC Heritage. Won for the first time on the PGA Tour by defeating Jon Curran at the second extra hole of sudden death at the Memorial. The win came in his 165th start at the age of 36 years, 11 months, and 15 days. The win earned starts at Quicken Loans National and PGA Championship as well as a spot in the field of the 2017 Tournament of Champions and 2017 Masters. Jumped to 44th in the Official World Golf Ranking with the Memorial victory to earn a berth at the 2016 U.S. Open Championship. Missed the cut at Oakmont, but in his next start was T-7th at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Also finished T-10th at the PGA Championship. Played in 28 events on the PGA Tour, had seven top-10s and was 24th in the FedExCup rankings and 17th on the money list.
2017 Notes: Played in 28 PGA Tour events making 17 cuts with three top-ten finishes. Had a T-9th at the SBS Tournament of Champions, then a T-9th at the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship where he lost to Soren Kjeldsen in the round of 16. Best finish was T-3rd at the RBC Heritage, two shots back of winner Wesley Bryan. Played in the first two FedExCup playoff events, T-54th at the Northern Trust, T-30th at the Dell Technologies Championship, and finished 85th in the final FedExCup standings.
2018 Notes: Played in 26 PGA Tour events making 16 cuts with three top-ten finishes. Was T-10th at the Shriners Hospitals and T-8th at the RSM Classic. Sometime at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, his hip started to hurt but doesn't remember doing anything to hurt it. For the next five months experienced pain and took injections to help ease the pain. Did have a T-6th at the Barracuda Championship but after missing the cut at the Northern Trust, to finish his year 116th in the final FedExCup standings decided it was time to get it fixed. Ten days later he had hip surgery to fix a torn labrum in his left hip and well as well as a femoroacetabular impingement that prevented him from making a normal rotation.
2019 Notes: McGirt did everything to rehab the injury, but in August required a second surgery to remove a bone spur nearly twice the size of the original one. It was a grim time because the reality was that he might never hit a golf ball again, let alone playing competitively again. McGirt spent the rest of the year rehabbing the injury.
2020 Notes: Spent the first half of the year rehabbing and finally felt ready to go and played in the Korn Ferry Tour's TPC Colorado Championship. Despite feeling great, his game was rusty, he shot 73-71 to miss the cut. He was able to make his return to the PGA Tout at the Memorial.
