Father got him started in the game. Held various retail and insurance jobs during time away from the golf course. Says making it to the final stage of the PGA Tour National Qualifying Tournament was his biggest thrill in golf. He got to the final stage twice, in 2001 and 2003. Has played on the Web.com Tour where he played full time between 2002 and 2005. In 95 events his best finish was T-2 at the 2002 State Farm Open, losing in a four-man playoff in an event eventually won by Andy Miller. Garwood had four top-10 finishes and earned $167,958. His best year on that tour was in 2002 when he finished 49th on the money list in 27 starts.
Attended the Champions Tour National Qualifying Tournament in November 2013 and finished eighth overall. Saw his opportunity to earn one of the five fully-exempt positions available slip away when he three-putted for bogey on the final hole of regulation and fell back into a T-4th with four others. Eventually dropped four spots when he made a double bogey on his second playoff hole.
2013 Notes: Made five official starts on the PGA Tour Champions after turning 50 in March. Finished 57th on the money list, aided by two strong showings during the year. First open-qualified for the PGA Tour Champions at The Principal Charity Classic, where he was T-7th. His second top-10 came in September at the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, where he claimed a T-2nd finish after open-qualifying earlier in the week. Returned to Q-School and T-4th getting his card for 2014.
2014 Notes: Troubled by bulging-disc issues in the latter part of the season but took advantage of his conditionally exempt status at the start of the season to play his way into a full exemption for 2015. Was among the top-10 in a third of his 18 starts even though he did not play in an event from mid-February through mid-May. Nearly won his first PGA Tour Champions title when he lost in a two-hole playoff to Tom Pernice Jr. at The Principal Charity Classic. Backed up his performance in Iowa with a 4th-place finish at the Encompass Championship. Was again in the mix in mid-August at the Boeing Classic when he had a T-5th. One week later, was T-9th at the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary and then three weeks later, finished T-7th at the Pacific Links Hawai'i Championship. Cemented his spot among the top 30 on the money list when he was T-6th at the Greater Hickory Kia Classic in October. Was 26th on the money list and 28th in the Schwab ranking.
2015 Notes: Back issues (bulging disc) caused him to miss most of the season before he returned to action in October at the San Antonio Championship where he finished T-62nd. In his next start in the final full-field event, was T-9th at the Toshiba Classic.
2016 Notes: After a frustrating 2015 season which saw him play in just two events due to back problems, bounced back in a big way in 2016 by winning for the first time at the SAS Championship. He played 22 events and along with his first Champions Tour win had six top-10 finishes including a T-3rd at the Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship. Was 20th on the money list and 15th in the Schwab Rankings.
2017 Notes: Finished 21st on the final money list helped in large part by three top-10 finishes in his last four starts, including a runner-up finish at the SAS Championship. Was T-4th at the Allianz Championship, then T-10th at the U.S. Senior Open Championship. He ended the year after his 2nd at the SAS with a T-8th at the Dominion Energy Charity, T-5th at the PowerShares QQQ and T-27th at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
2018 Notes: Played in 22 PGA Tour Champions events with three top-10 finishes. Started his year with a T-6th at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, was T-5th at the Cologuard Classic 4 shots back of winner Steve Stricker. Was T-9th at the SAS Championship. Finished 43rd in the Charles Schwab Cup, and he did not advance to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship for the first time since 2015.
2019 Notes: T-8th at the Hoag Classic three shots back of the playoff between Kirk Triplett and Woody Austin. Was T-8th at the Principal Charity Classic and T-7th at the MasterCard Japan Championship, 6 shots back of winner Scott McCarron.
