Chih-Bing Lam

Playing in his third Open Championship, Lam shot 68-67 at the Asian IFQ to finish third. This will be his third Open championship, when Lam qualified for the British Open in 2007, he became only the second Singaporean to play in the event. (Mardan Marmat was the first qualifier). Also played in 2008.
Lam picked up golf from his parents at age 10, who used to bring him to their home course at Singapore Island Country Club. He attended the University of Arizona in the United States where he graduated with a Business Management degree, and subsequently obtained his MBA from the Univeristy of Leicester, UK. He got married in 2007 and welcomed the arrival of his first son in 2008. He said that working with coach Andrew Welsford since the end of 2007 has been a turning point in his career.
Lam broke through in grand style for his maiden title in 2008 when he won the season-ending Volvo Masters of Asia in Bangkok. He made an immediate impact in 2010, claiming tied 13th and 14th place finishes at the Asian Tour International in Thailand and Avantha Masters in India respectively before a joint eighth finish at the SAIL Open in India. His best result came at the Air Bagan Myanmar Open where he finished fifth. He endured a frustrating start to the 2009 season, missing the cuts in most of the opening events but regained his form with a tied eighth finish at the Maekyung Open. He ended the year with a tied-ninth finish at the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open for his other top-10 of the year. Also qualified for his fourth appearance at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup with Mardan Mamat. In 2008, he received a huge boost by qualifying and playing in all four rounds at the Open Championship. Lam subsequently posted a top-10 at the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational and later contended at the Barclays Singapore Open where he played his way into the final group on Sunday alongside Phil Mickelson. Although he fell off the pace to finish tied 18th, he earned enough money to secure his full card for 2009 for the first time in his career. With the pressure off, Lam free-wheeled his game and challenged again for the Hana Bank Vietnam Masters title to finish equal sixth and was runner-up in the season's penultimate event at the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open. At the Volvo Masters of Asia, Lam was amongst a five-way tie for the third round lead before shooting a flawless 67 on the last day to triumph by two strokes. Prior to his breakthrough, Lam tasted several victories in domestic tournaments across the region. He enjoyed a distinguished amateur career where he helped Singapore win the Putra Cup in Hong Kong in 1993 along with Mardan Mamat. Also found success with Mardan by qualifying for the World Cup in 2002, 2005 and 2006. In 2007, Lam qualified for the British Open with a top-five finish at the qualifier in Singapore.
